Is is possible to put more stuff at the sides so the actual comic can use more of the height of the screen? Most comics are in portrait mode, but computer screens tend to be landscape. Just a thought.

The screen does get a little crowded with the menu toggled on. I'll work on a design with a side menu. I think it could look very cool. I could have both alternatives and let users choose.
The only challenge I can think of is displaying the comic title. I'm not sure it would fit in a sidebar. Depends on the title, I guess...
