What is Uban Homesteading?
It is wanting to remove yourself from consumerism, to buy less and have more.
It is going back to the ways of old and striving to make things by hand and from scratch.
It is respecting the land and everything on it.
It is striving to live a sustainable lifestyle and support the local economy and in doing so lowering your carbon footprint.
It is sharing your skills with others and passing down your knowledge for which STEEM is an excellent tool.
so come and share your skills and stories on the chainBB homesteading forum
I have already written a few posts on this subject and have received a nice amount of feedback from the community so I want to take it a few steps further. I will be writing a series of posts that fulfill the criteria outlined above and are easy to implement if you have a balcony or small garden.
The first step to take is to produce even a small amount of your own food or herbs. There is no better feeling then growing and consuming something you grew yourself. You can do this even if you don’t have a yard, and I am a very good example of this ( check it here) I used planters on a vertical surface near windows or on my balcony in summer.
But there are a lot of steps that can bring you closer to being an Urban Homesteader and these are the topics I want to write some posts about. If you look through my posting history you will see that I have touched on most of these before but now I will go through them step by step
Urban homesteading for beginners:
- Cut your waste
- Start a garden
- Make your own:
a. Food
b. beauty products and cosmetics
c. cleaning and housekeeping products
d. herbal teas and medicines - Shop local and buy in season
- Harvest Rainwater
- Cut Electricity Use / hang laundry to dry
- Re-purpose instead of throwing away
- Reduce Meat Consumption
- Learn How to Can Your Fruits and Veggies
- Add Alternative Energy Sources
- Raise Backyard Chickens
- Plant fruit/nut trees
- Compost your waste
If you feel there are more topics that should be added to the list I will see if they fit, research them and make a nice post out of them as well.
As always, your feedback is appreciated

Awesome post! I live in chicago and currently am getting all the materials together to grow microgreens for myself.
A method I have been using to reduce consumption is simple and cool: I put all of my clothes on the hanging bar backwards. In a month or so I will easily be able to see what things I don't use and I can donate them!
Really cool, the homegrown herbs really add an extra dimension to cooking...
And the clothes trick is neat, will have to try it myself
I may just make an urban homesteading post soon. You've inspired me, although I feel like I can always do more to reduce my footprint it's satisfying to make small progress.

try out chainBB for the homesteading post, there is a specific homesteading community there
https://steemit.com/homesteading/@felander/homesteading-forum-on-chainbb
and for the footprint, I guess we just have to realise that every small bit helps if everyone would do it
Wow... good philosophy! not always easy to realize though... back to the roots!
Its going back to the roots in a way that's possible even for city dwellers without moving to a farm, lol
