Hey @minismallholding, I'm in suburban Adelaide too, and my brother is giving us an avocado tree for our backyard.
He says they're easy to grow, but some resources online claim they're quite difficult.
Our yard is just weeds at the moment, and I figured if we can make one tree work, why not 10?
Have you grown avocados in Adelaide before?
Any advice appreciated.

If love to grow avocado, but sadly I don't have one. If it's a type chosen for our climate then it might well be as easy to grow as your brother says. I think they are more tropical by nature usually, so I'm guessing moisture will be key and good soil. I do know that our blazing summer sun can bake their leaves, and have heard advice saying partial shade is ideal. Your weeds could make a good compost for it. 😉
I'd love to hear how you go with it. If you get a little avocado orchard going you can start a market garden! There's a customer right here! 😁
Have you heard of Joe's Connected Gardens at Elizabeth Grove? They have a Facebook page and they grow avocado. Last year was their best year for them with all that summer rain we had. They have a group on Facebook too: "Joe's Connected Gardens Show and Tell/ Q&A Forum" I bet they could give you some tips.
I'll look him up. We're on the opposite side of the city, up the hill.
I understand drainage is important, which shouldn't be an issue.
I'd like a little orchard.
I'll let you know.
I think drainage is important for everything but marsh plants! Lol! We have clay soil, so that might be our problem come winter when everything gets water logged. I'd put in marsh plants except everything turns to concrete come summer! Sounds like you should be fine there though.
My brother thought we were all tech nerds on here, but showing him your blog tipped him over the edge; he's just posted his introduction.
He's really into rediscovering edible Aussie flora and fauna.
He might like @ligayagardener then. He's pretty knowledgeable on bushfoods and medicines. He lives in Gawler. I'm pretty interested in the Aussie edibles too. I've only recently started looking into them though.
I noticed him, as you resteemed one of his posts. Danny will be all over that. Good call :)
