TAKING A BREAK FROM THE DAILY GRIND

in #homesteading7 years ago

Often life is lived in pieces, and sometimes you need to switch things up.

I have spent the last few days grinding a lot of stumps down on my land whenever I had the opportunity. However, yesterday afternoon I decided to take a break from the daily grind and see if I could scrape by.

For those of you who don’t know, I’m having some fun with a bit of wordplay there.

TIME TO SCRAPE

While I am not completely done grinding all of the stumps in the driveway, I have enough done to be able to get our shipping container in. To start with, I needed to swap out the stump grinder for an angle blade. Now that the stumps are down far enough, I can scrape the topsoil and debris off to get the driveway reading for road base.

@Mobile-joat, who does a lot of my mechanical work for me, drove by and offered up some advice and help, so we got started.

Once we had the stump grinder off, we had to hook up the scraper. The scraper hooked up to the tractor just fine, but it still needed to be welded to reinforce it.

Although I did get some cool photos of the welding, @mobile-joat was actually getting some real work done and making sure that equipment would be tough enough for me to abuse for a bit.

READY TO GO

Soon, I had the tractor back down on the land with my new tool hooked up and ready to work. I was mostly just getting used to it and testing it out.

It did a good job and handled quite well. I wanted to make a few light passes to try to get the job started. The majority of the work I’ll be doing today, and I already put in some time this morning. Perhaps I’ll even get in some road base before the end of the day!

Yesterday I took Pinky-Pepper and Red-Pepper down with me to the land to work. They had fun riding in the tractor, but they had to do a lot of rock picking too. Those are two tough girls that we are raising there, and they can be some really hard workers. Yesterday I worked them long and hard… perhaps too long and too hard…

Just look at that! Red-pepper asleep on the job! You can get fired for that some places! Of course, you would probably need to be older than five and actually getting paid, but still!

Pinky-Pepper and @papa-pepper did take a few funny photos of Red-Pepper sleeping, but we let her enjoy her nap for a bit. Obviously, we have our work cut out for us, but a family that works together gets a lot done!

THANKS GIRLS!

I could not have done it all on my own!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Always welcome @papa-pepper and thanks for the kindness ...you truly a great guy & loving dad too!

Papa-pepper, how much torque does that tractor engine put out?

Honestly, I have NO IDEA, but I could ask later tonight!

I would definitely appreciate that. Thanks.

That's really something and made me think of things I hadn't in a long time. My Dad used to have an old Cat D7 dozer that he cleared land with and there are pics of me and later my little brother often asleep on the bulldozer. Thanks for reminding me of that and you have a beautiful family :)

Really? That is so cool. It is getting a little common for us right now.

Monster Truck the Pepper

Red-Pepper

Yeah, I'll see if I can dig up a pic of him holding one of us on the bulldozer. I seem to remember one pic, where you'll be mind blown at the sideburns he's sporting, I mean, wow. No promises on when, Mom's got those pictures somewhere though, lol.

Having fun with the fam. That's what life is all about. Just beautiful

Thanks mate! We do enjoy our time together, even if we are working!

@transilvania
yeah... life is truly beautiful...

I like your tractor too and I haven't even rode it XD Like your post and glad to see you had fun!!

It is nice to have friends who will lend us things like that!

Wow, looks like a bunch of hard work @papa-pepper. I have three stumps that I really need to grind down in the next week or so and am not looking forward to it very much. Mostly because one of them is right close to some of my water pipes and I'm nervous it's going to go sideways on me. Wish me luck.

@bigpanda
you have my 100% steemit luck from @kenhudoy
you shall overcome those 3 stumps successfully but do me a little favor... revert and tell me how all went!
great comment

I'll do that @kenhudoy.

ok @bigpanda
keep steemng hot!

Yeah, thank sounds like a tough one! I hope that all go well with it!

Excellent punnage, and also... Yeah. There's something gratifying about watching you doing the homesteading thang.

I'll keep doing it if you want to keep watching. Heck, I may even keep doing it anyway!

omg Red-pepper looks so tired :) give my love to both of them <3

Will do. Thanks!

YES... You most certainly deserve to take a break AND really like the "Play-on-Words".

Enjoy Your posts more & more and it's REALLY incredible to see how well You & Your wife are raising & teaching Your children... THIS is truly "priceless" for Your children & anyone else that may have children, so they may "learn" a thing or two by the examples of how You are living...

You must be so Proud of Pinky-Pepper and Red-Pepper... and that look of pure innocence of the photo of Red-Pepper sleeping because she worked so hard... again "Priceless" !!

BIG Kudos... Cheers !!

@sacred-agent

What a fun work day with the family!

Oh yeah @hotrod! It sure was!

I love your interaction with your kids , they love going on all different kinds of adventures with you . Sometimes we all need a break and do something different , I actually have a tractor back home in Pakistan and I love driving it in the feilds . Seems like your kids enjoy the tractor as much as you do :D

They all (well the big three) all woke up early just to work with me today! How cool is that?

That's truely a great feeling for fathers , The bond is definetly unbreakable ! I would go on adventures with them everyday :D

Our life is an adventure, and we are enjoying it to the fullest.

I just saw Pinky-Pepper washing my truck a moment ago. First off, I never wash my truck. Secondly, she thought that she would do it just to bless me, all on her own! WOW!

That must have been very adorable !! She probably knows you didn't want to do it so she decided to step forward and help daddy , you have raised them very well

I love puns so I enjoyed your play on words! Keep on keeping on!

Glad that you enjoyed it. Thank you!

@bedoodle i love puns too
great comment dear

What a great day with your kids!

It was. Enjoying another one right now.

@lifes-a-donut
great comment... family matters a lot...

Yes, I agree! My best friend told me, "When your kids ask you to play while your doing your dishes, do it, because your dishes will be there later, your kids will be grown and gone."

ahh...you just reminded me of my post on family versus office... a short story about a kid and his mum...please look it up...!

I will definitely do that! Thanks!

Always welcome!

Great choice. Sure you love it plus my latest health tip...

I love seeing the fault get involved. Such lovely little girls :)

Lovely and helpful!

If you work hard you need a break to work hard again best regards and steem on

I did not really take a break at all, it was a play on words.

I did not really take a break at all, it was a play on words, but I know what you mean.

Papa-pepper am your follower here ever since i met you here. I always enjoy your post. @tybello

Glad to hear it and I am pleased to know that you appreciate what I am up to.

nice, upvote me, @papa-pepper

No. Sorry, but you can't just show up on my post and demand upvotes.

As far as I know, I do not know you and have not even heard of you.

So far, I'm NOT impressed.

Comments like that are not the type of interaction that I am looking for.

Did you even look at my post, or just show up to command me to upvote you?

great man @papa-pepper, love ur work, also love the fact that you are showing your girls your work, kudos to Pinky-Pepper and Red-Pepper for agreeing to work with daddy...awesome!

Today they even woke up early just to come work with me. How cool is that?

very cool! they are showing gr8 interest, in few years time u can be rest assured that when you travel abroad or unavailable of couple of days, you need not worry cos your farm is in good hands

That's right, they will be able to hold their own! Thanks @peman!

Niiiice photos

Thanks. A lot of hard work, but we are enjoying it!

I'm not great with tools and machinery heck they scare me :/ but I have to say that scraper looks like a plough bucket repositioned from the front to the back :) the time with family is important even when your busy :) the property is shaping up :D thanks for sharing

We are heading in the right direction, step by step.

Cool, my greetings to you @ fahrilzubir, from Aceh, Indonesia.

Greetings back to you too!

You have a great little team there!

They are my team @team101! Thanks!

lots of work, but looks like a labor of love!
how much land do you have?

Just about 8 acres right now.

There is nothing like daddy-daughter time working together, it's where great memories are made. I had my daughter building fence, putting metal roof on and even slaughtering hogs, hell she even changes her own oil.
You are going to have strong children Papa! Good work!

Way to raise 'em @jed78. I agree, precious memories with results to last!

awesome post..........!! you are very hardworking @papa-pepper.
nice to see your post:) is it really a break ......... hahha !!

LOL - It's at least a change of pace, if not a real break!

yes , you're right :)

Hey Great Job on the tractor mate. Keep up the good work.
Keep up the hard work.

Very nice family photos.
Family is everything, what more children to grow up ..

Thanks. It is a great family and I am happy to be a part of it!

Dude, you get so much done it is unreal! It seriously blows my mind.

My next goal will be sleeping!

wow now that is what i understand!!!

Thanks @edgarsart! I hope that all is going well with you too!

That's great man! Spending time with your family is the most important thing in life! You are a rich man from all points of views!

Cheers!

Wow @jwolf! Thanks for the compliment and encouragement!

Awesome. These girls are really lucky. About the lyricist part. What kind of genres do you write for?

Kind of anything and everything. I like to get creative wordsmithing.

Cool. Maybe you can share stuff you have written with me. I am in a blues/rock band in Kathmandu and we've had a really hard time writing lyrics in English. Maybe we could collaborate or something?

Alway great to see @papa-pepper and @papa-pepper keeping it real. Keep up the good job

For REAL!

Absolutely, you are welcome.

Awesome stuff

Thank you! We are enjoying it!

hehehe nice ;-)

This is really starting to take shape huh?

Very exciting times. And it is so lovely to see the kids involved. This will be their home too and they are building it with you.

And in doing so you are all building an even stronger family.

You are an example of how to do this thing right. If only more families followed your example...

Wow, you have made A LOT of good points there. Thank you for sharing your observations! These are exciting times!

After Monster Truck this time it's Red-pepper sleeping so tired!
Am waiting when they will get a shot of @papa-pepper in deep sleep! That would be fun to see!Lol!

LOL! - Been working hard enough that they just might!

I like that you're keeping the tradition of (positive) child labor alive!

I did some cypress-knee pulling in my day.

They might as well get used to it young... life can be a long time!

@papa-pepper you are working those little peppers hard. But you are also making memories that will last them their life times. And everyone needs a nap .

Right up my alley abusing equipment Wahooo!

I'm just learning it, but I'm a quick learner!

Smart to keep learning!

We have some friends who do a lot of construction as a family and one of the wives always sends her toddlers out to Daddy at naptime because they fall asleep on his lap while he's doing similar jobs. How they sleep while jostling around in there is beyond me, but they do it!

Interesting!

This post has reminded me of the sense of accomplishment and reward one receives from hands on labour. Often that sense of joy so fleeting from other activities we "believe" will give us joy (shopping, eating, consumption in generally) is fleeting at best. Been putting off some home renovations for no real good reason, but reading through this has given me inspiration on the benefits, and lite a fire under my a**. Thanks bud.

Absolutely love that you are including your daughters in the homesteading effort. This will stand them in good stead as they grow. Good Job @papa-pepper
