Yesterday, we saw the weather forecast for today was going to be perfect for working outside! This was a much needed break from all the rain we've had. We went to the local hardware store last night and picked up additional fence to finish up areas we've had plans to do. Unfortunately after walking to the back side of our property, this is what we found left of a 5ft fence we had recently installed:
An overflow for our pond caused rushing water to stack up pine needles, mud, sticks, logs, etc.. until it bent the tposts holding the fence. We will be changing the fence type from no climb goat fencing to barbed wire in this section in hopes to catch less debris.
The good news is that the rain did help soften the ground in other areas and we were able to easily plant 9 new fruit trees. We added 3 fig, 2 apricot, 2 apple, 1 plum, and 1 nectarine.
We have decided to turn this part of our yard into an orchard. We are going to keep adding trees until we run out of room.
We've had that happen all too often! Water can do a lot of damage!
It surely can! We have never seen this much rain out here. Just another day on the farm.
That's a decent amount of fruit trees! I am going to start clearing a space for an orchard when spring finally arrives :) What other types of trees will you be planting?
I've actually been working on a map today of where we have trees planted and their types, here is a snippet for some of the varieties we already have growing:
What are you going to be planting in your orchard?
Probably going to start with the basics - apple, plum, & pear hopefully this summer :)
That's a good place to start. That is what we did the first few years. Every spring I hop around from store to nursery looking for good, inexpensive trees of different varieties. Since they take so long to produce, we consider it an investment and the sooner we get them planted, the better. As of today we have ~60 fruit and nut trees/shrubs. It will probably take 40-50 more to fill up that one area.
Man that fence looks like a disaster! Was it just that section in the picture that was ruined?
Thankfully yes, it was just that section.
Looks like a nice open field with a beautiful row of trees! Nice work, sorry about the fence.
Thanks! The fence ended up being okay. I went out yesterday afternoon to clean up the mess. Since we had the intention of going out and finishing the project, realizing we had to go backwards a few steps, sort of changed the mood of getting it done. Plus, with rain continuing, we need to let the posts set up before trying to add any fencing to them.
