I agree that space exploration is important next step, and have no doubts we will continue trying, and advancements in this field suggest there is a good chance of success. However, what I argue is the priorities. Both colonies in Antarctica and Mars are important, however science fiction like they may seem.
There is more good that can be done with the new technologies here before we attempt anything on Mars, Moon, or elsewhere. However, there isn't same amount of excitement and enthusiasm for both. More money, resources and energy will flow where there is more excitement. We will probably concur Mars before Antarctica or similar places on Earth. Even in such case the technology developed will be of enormous benefits here on Earth.

It is not about escaping Earth's problem but naturally and/or eventually, Earth could be destroyed either by the Sun or the humanity ourselves. No matter if we colonized most parts of the Earth or not, it will happen. And if it happen, there could be over crowding and massive energy consumption. Thus making the Earth uninhabitable in the very end.
Not to mention, there's a tiny chance of global nuclear war. Which I hope won't happen.

I don't think polar bears would want to live in Antarctica. However, there are plenty of penguins.
Humans want to show their power and skills by establishing colonies on Mars, but it is not possible. There are many limitations on the planet Mars. The Earth still has the capacity to hold many people, I think the Earth can hold 10x the population it has now and there will be enough food supply. People will also live on the continent of Antarctica.
I think a lot of experimenting about living in extreme environments has been already done in Antarctica. And what I am wondering sometimes, and some SciFi writers have has that topic too is the question whether colonizing Mars really should be the Next Step or whether big space stations with artificial Gravity through rotation is the better Option.
