While we do have these in America, most homes use central air. Those units are about 3x the size of your typical Japanese aircon but can heat/cool an entire house. Honestly, for a family, I think central air is more efficient than having 3 separate aircons.
Yes you are right. I think the biggest advantage of central aircon system is that you don't have to deal with the extra space the individual machine is going to occupy.
