Well, as far as a police state goes, it seems to be pretty non-existent. Police don't want to mess with you, they consider it a pain in the ass (they are lazy in the best way- haha). And while there are more cameras up now than there used to be, most places do not have cameras. Government sponsored cameras (street lights, etc.) are almost non-existent. They really don't have the means to put out the surveillance systems that are running in the states.

One bad thing, they do random car stops and inspections. Usually just cops hoping to find a way to shake you down for a small bribe. So if you have a car and drive you're going to bump into cops, other than that, not ever.

The last President put the nation in debt to China and upped gov spending big time, so now people are getting pissed at some of the inflation that is happening, a real estate bubble I think as well. The new president is continuing the same policies but he almost lost to more of a capitalist in the last election. Hopefully this guy will be gone in the next election.
