Bitcoin and blockchain need more killer applications. Steemit is here and working, seems to be one of them. Good. But who is the next. There are some serious candidates:
Candidates
- Turing-complete blockchain machine: Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Expanse
- Annonymous cash: Dash, Monero, ZCash
- Distributed web: MaidSafe
- Easy contracts: Lisk, Rise
- Distributed social site: Synereo
- Record keeping: Factom
- Distributed exchanges: BitShares, Counterparty, NXT
- something completely different
Who do you think is missing in the list? Or who should not be there?
A decentralized, cryptocurrency-based "Betfair" equivalent.
Betfair is a player-to-player betting market. Centralized. But it was a revolution compared to simple betting sites.
Games who have cryptocurrency-based economies can also be a huge smash. Or existing games with their own "market" that integrate cryptocurrency in their operation.
I know but cannot say. 😎
Pity ;-)
Some other things might be pretty important that do not come directly from the financial sector, e.g., Distributed Trusted Timestamping seems to be an interesting approach for intellectual property rights management. There are example implementations for the bitcoin blockchain, e.g., OriginStamp...
True, seems to me that it could belong to "record keeping" category like Factom.
Read the article and I agree. Current browsers are vulnerable, especially when not updated or when plug-ins are used and even without them there is a risk. The idea behind decentralized web security is good however it will increase complexity and add some other potential weaknesses. I'd rather see proper 2nd or 3rd factor auth, hardware keys and etc. It makes me feel much more secure in terms of my private keys. Thing is that even distributed data can be compromised when keys are stolen. In general my impression is that we are still moving security rather than solving security. But definitely there is a place for such an applications.
The tree (chain) of trust can probably solve that.
Thanks for the reference, yes, it looks good. It gives at least some confidence to a common user. As it's a whole new process, there will be hacking attempts around it too, though (social engineering but at least you'll be able to fight for your account somehow).
Wouldn't see Lisk as a killer app. It's based on javascript wich uses something called "floating numbers" wich means that it's dealing with numbers in a way that is a problem when dealing with money.
"Javascript numbers are not the most reliable. Especially when we are dealing with a crypto-currency, you really want your numbers to be on point. JS uses floating point which means some things get approximated and digits get lost in certain cases."
My favorites right now are Dash, Monero, Ethereum, Storj and counterparty.
Javascript is not a problem for financial if properly implemented (as integers) or with using proper libraries (bigdecimal, etc.). I'm not involved in any of these projects and so I don't have any deep knowledge but all of these show certain potential. Time will tell. I definitely like some ideas behind but it will mainly depend on project development and further decisions.
