Startrails at Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake Lodge

Yoho National Park, British Columbia

Been a busy couple of days for me and I haven't put the time I wanted into Steemit for commenting and sharing, but I have a huge post coming soon about my experiences with the total solar eclipse last summer - stay tuned for that!

In the meantime here's a photo I took outside the famous Emerald Lake Lodge in the Canadian Rockies. I left the camera exposing for a couple hours while I went and had an awesome dinner at the lodge bar. Multitasking!

This is awesome! I love the way you got the reflection in the water.

It's true, the reflection makes all the different. Thank you! :)

Phenomenal shot, in so many ways. Resteemed!

You're awesome, @photofeed, thank you!! :D

Totally agree! Had to resteem too!

Awesome!
Question, did you cover up your camera with some branches or something to hide it from possible thieves? Or is that not something you have to worry about in Canada? ;)

Thieves? What are thieves? Is that like a Robin Hood reference? Maybe I don't understand because I'm Canadian?

lol! Those friendly Canadians...

Alright, that's a near perfect photo. Amazing work, my friend. You got it all. Water, reflection, a bridge, a lit subject, mountains, stars, trails, color. You name it. It's like a Thomas Kinkade but if he was born in this generation.

LADIES @derekkind has it all... i mean his pictures do.

There are ladies on steemit right? Haha

Wow. Can I print your comment and stick it on my wall? That's awesome!

Alternately, can take this out of context and share it on my farmersonly.com profile like @jarvie suggests?

In all seriousness, I love Thomas Kinkade, and I really appreciate my photo being compared with his paintings in any way. I wish I could take more Thomas Kinkadian photos!

Haha yeah go ahead. I've always wanted a quote of mine to be on somebody's wall!
And like I said, it really does have that perfect setting with a balance of light that paintings have. Such a great one.

Hehe, thanks! :)

Ahhhh, your posts make me want to explore my country WAY more.
Big question though, what did you have for dinner?

A hamburger. a really good hamburger. ;)

This is absolutely stunning photography.

Hey, thanks! :D

Cant wait to see the eclipse shots mate. Emerald Lake is beautiful; I have not had the pleasure of visiting there yet.

Try to go there when there's been a fresh and heavy snowfall - those have created the best photos I've seen from the place. :)

Its just a long way from here. We will roadtrip that way this summer hopefully.

Derek! You are legend!

Well, gee, thank you! 8)

Brilliant shot, love the reflections and star trails!

Thank you for commenting, Keith! :)

Love the photo with the star trails they look so good.

Thank you. :)

Another great photo! And great use of time...

Time: if you can't beat it, join it? :)

Amazing! I had to upvote this! Could you please share your process. In my mind on a 2hr exposure the lights on the house would have blown out. I could be dead wrong but that’s why I’m asking you’r process behind this s photo.. live this keep them pictures coming.

Thank you! Maybe I should have clarified in the original post - instead of taking one looooooong exposure, I was taking continuous 30-second exposures (like a timelapse). I blended those together for the startrails, and I took a separate darker exposure for the light on the building to make sure it wasn't blown out, and blended that in as well. :)

Great, thanks for clearing it up. That's what I thought but i had to ask.

No problem! :)

One of the most beautiful spots on the planet! Your remarkable shot captured the enchanting beauty of Emerald Lake! Very very well done!

Thank you so much! I do love it there. :)

I have not visited there in decades. Your shot is almost inspiring me to plan a visit soon! Thank you again!

Almost? Do I need to post more pictures to convince you? ;)

Haha ... If they are anything like this one, Derek, I can see myself heading west next weekend! If you do post more, please make sure I see them. Just learning how things work here! I am feeling like I am at sea with no compass, however absolutely enjoying the journey!! Cheers!

I understand the feeling! You'll get the hang of it soon, though. It makes more sense after a while. :)

You promise? Meanwhile, please keep the Emerald Lake shots coming! Thanks in advance!

Fantastic shot! Seeing you pictures always makes me want to go out and shot!

Well, that's as good a compliment as I could wish - it's awesome if I can inspire more photography! :D

Amazing photo and very cool location. I love British Columbia!

Thank you, Scott! :)

Mate your on a roll! Keep up the great posts. You really know how to get take your camera to the limit of what it is capable of. The balance of your colours is always on point and you get the maximum richness out of them without muddying them up, ontop of that you composition is always fantastic! Have to check if 'muddying' and 'richness' are real words.

Ah man, that's an awesome comment, David - I try hard to do the things you mentioned, and it's encouraging to have that stuff noticed. Thank you!!! :D

What a pretty picture! I love the reflections in the water.

Thank you! :D

Can you share your set up for this gorgeous picture? Well done!

Thanks! I used the Nikon D750 and Rokinon 14mm lens to take many 30-second exposures over the course of a couple hours. I then combined these exposures in Photoshop to create the star trails that you see.

Thanks for sharing! I'll try it someday

It's fun seeing the stars stack up!

Wow! Great shot ♥

Thank you! :)

Did you blend exposures or is this one shot? It looks blended; if you didn't blend, could tell me how you took this photo? The reflection of the stars in the water is awesome. Nice capture!

Thanks! It's blended. I used a really wide 14mm lens and took a series of 30-second exposures over the course of a couple hours, then combined them all in Photoshop to produce the effect you see here. :)

What a fantastic photo - not only the long exposure but the colour and composition too. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, I'm glad you think so! :)

Looks like a fairy tale

Mmhmm. Emerald Lake has that feel to it.

Beautiful symmetry. And nice technique here!

Thank you! :)

Stunning! Thanks for sharing & love that you were having a delicious dinner whilst your camera was capturing this ;-)
