How to Learn a Language Quickly - The BEST study method

in #language7 years ago (edited)

In my last post on Language I told you what you need in order to succeed at learning s language. One of those things is a good study method. I will share with you the best study method by far that is so simple, you will thinkcthst I’m messing with you, but it’s literally the only thing you need in order to succeed at learning a language. You do it in school but it’s such a small part of your study time.

Making Sentences

That’s it.

All you need to do to become fluent at a language is make a lot of sentences. I’m not messing with you, this is seriously all it takes and if you spent 80% of your studyctime on it, you’d learn 8x faster.

Don’t just make random sentences though.

This is a haphazard way to learn. Focus on one grammar point that you can find in a textbook. Follow the rules laid out in the textbooks and keep making sentences with that grammar until it becomes natural. This is how the most effective language students learn. It took me so long to learn how to speak Japanese.

I was focused too much on finding the right study method, really I should have been discarding all the wrong study methodS.

Some extra points though:

  • speak out these sentences, you should write some but speak out more.
  • use new vocabulary to increase your efficiency.
  • try to make some funny sentences, they are easier to remember.
  • don't push yourself to use grammar you aren’t sure how to use, stick to the grammar you already understand
  • The first few sentences you make, check in with your textbook or teacher to make sure you are doing it right.

The goal is to repeat this grammatical structure over and over until it becomes automatic so you don’t have to think in your native language.

If you’d like to study with me, I offer pay-what-you-want lessons over discord. I can teach basic Japanese and Chinese and give some helpful advice and study along with you for any other language. For more info click here

Sort:

I have read somewhere about a guy who supposedly spoke a lot of languages and he just got the lords prayer ( the one prayer everyone has to learn I hope that is the right translation ) translated in the language he wanted to learn and started to learn the new language from there.

As far as starting points go this can work because you have lots of context for the stuff you are practicing, but the language used in these sorts of translations can sometimes be archaic or less commonly used in every day speaking.

Haha that’s one way to learn I guess...doesn’t seem like the most effective way to me, but you could potentially learn a lot of grammar and vocabulary.

Interesting approach, makes quite a lot of sense. Although I'm not studying any foreign language as of current I do collect information like this how to do it efficiently once its time so to speak.

Do you have any thoughts on the "Tim Ferris" method? I'll provide a link, I find it quite fascinating as well. https://tim.blog/2009/01/20/learning-language/

Otherwise, if you're into travelling, vlogs, fitness, self-development etc feel free to check out my channel, in any case keep up the good work and I'll see you around! :)

I haven’t heard of it...I’ll check it out now, thanks for the link.

It looks pretty similar to what I suggest but slightly more formulaic while I try to be more intuitive. I wouldn’t worry about the most commonly used words, I always focus on sentences. But it’s definetly on to something.

You might want to add that while you're making those sentences, you should repeat them aloud to the point where you can say them smoothly.

Then move on to another sentence using the same grammar pattern, substituting different subject or object, or possibly verb. Then repeat that until you can do it with that grammar pattern and any random combination of subject/object/verb and not having to write it down for a cue.

If you don't have a teacher with whom you can check your sentences, you can also cheat and use the google method: Google exactly the sentence you just made and see how many exact matches there are. If you have more than a hundred thousand exact matches, it's probably valid grammar. It might not mean what you think it means, but it's valid grammar.

I thought I inferred all that, but I guess I could have been clearer.

Haha oh the google method. I’ll just randomly ask acnative speaker, if I can’t find one I’ll fish in a Facebook group or I guess now I’d fish at Steemit.

I thought I inferred

You mean imply? An inference is a conclusion made based on observation... You probably meant implied...

I thought I [implied] all that, but I guess I could have been clearer.

It's possibly obvious to other readers, but I can be dense sometimes... and I suppose a second mention is more useful than someone else as dense as me missing it the first go around.

Haha oh the google method. I’ll just randomly ask a native speaker, if I can’t find one I’ll fish in a Facebook group or I guess now I’d fish at Steemit.

Yeah, but as a quick sanity check it doesn't require poking a human.

So you’d rather poke a search engine? It really comes down to who you like poking more and who enjoys being poked more.

Some times, late at night, when you're alone and trying to just get things done fast, you don't always want to rely on another person. Sure, most of the time you will, but you know, on those types of occasions, then a machine will do the job just fine.

Plus you can always do both.

Amazing idea
I will try it to be fluent in english language
thanks for sharing
keep up

Try it out.

Wow! Thank you soooo much for these tips. One day I wish I will be able to talk Japanese because this is a dream for me to visit Japan. I will certainly try your tips to learn an other language! Nice post!
