Can Chinese People Understand Me? - Learn Mandarin With Cryptogee - Restaurants

in #learnchinese7 years ago (edited)

I am learning Mandarin, Chinese at the moment; however it is quite distant from any language I've learned thus far. Unfortunately I don't know any Chinese people who speak Mandarin, so I'm interested to know if a genuine Chinese, Mandarin speaker would be able to understand what the hell I'm saying!

So Chinese people please tell me if you can understand me!

As a side note, I did want to upload this to dtube, however it seems like it is broken at the moment; so I will continue to show my support for the app, once it's fixed.

ARE YOU A MANDARIN SPEAKER? COULD YOU UNDERSTAND ME; WHAT'S MY PRONOUNCIATION LIKE? AS EVER, LET ME KNOW BELOW!

Hi, i'm chinese speaking. I thought you were scolding someone at first. Waiter: fu wu yuan. Say it more gently lol.

Haha, thanks for the feedback, that's good to know! :-) I think because I'm concentrating so hard on getting the right intonation, I get a bit shouty at times, lol :-D

Thanks again!

Cg

Not bad! Cryptogee, although the second sentence makes no sense - you probably need to add yao into it to be "I want to drink a glass of water", or you are just stating the fact that you are drinking a glass of water to a waiter/waitress.

Haha, yes I suddenly realised that, but was so caught up with pronouncing 'cup' and 'drink(ing)' correctly that I forgot :-)

Thanks for the feedback, please come back for the next one :-)

Cg

I'm not a native speaker, but I understand when I hear it :) not bad!

Awesome, thanks Kevin! I was a bit nervous as I feel I've been in the bubble of the app, I've been wondering just how good the voice recognition is. My sentences are slowly getting longer, so the next one will have longer more complex phrases. That's the challenge, to remain coherent consistently :-)

Cg

Pretty good!
Fu wu yuanRRR!!!! Is the Beijing way

Cool; I love hearing about region specific accents, plus one of the things I love about Mandarin is that RRRR sound. This is one of the best things about learning a language, I can decide to take up which regional specific accent I want. So yes, I think the Beijing way sounds pretty cool to me :-)

Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated.

Cg

Hi, there, I'm Chinese. I would said I understood the first sentence and the last one, but the middle one not quite sure. If you already had one glass of water, you Don't need to tell the waiter, but if you would like a glass of water, yeah, that make senses, the way you said was:" fu wu yuan, wo he le yi bei shui." Anyway, your Chinese is not bad at all. Keep it up!!! JIA YOU!!!

Wow that is great feedback @aurora-ca, thank you!

Yes I felt like I messed up the middle one, I didn't mean to say 'he le yi ..' I think I meant to say 'ge wo y bei shui*.

Thanks for the encouragement, I will keep practising and keep posting these videos, hopefully soon I will be able to present the whole 2 minutes in Chinese, that would be amazing! :-D

Cg

really funny, lol. As a mandarin speaker I can understand what you said:

服务员,我要一碗汤。
服务员,我喝一杯水。
服务员,一碗汤多少钱?

and your doughter is so lovely.
Hope all of you enjoy the learning procress.
Best wishes.

Awesome, thank you for your feedback, and putting my sentences in writing. I am just beginning to recognise certain Chinese characters, however I need to learn their names, as I'm just making up what they're called. Apart from the shoulder hook, I don't know any of the names.

We are loving learning Chinese, I have wanted to learn for so long, ever since the movie; Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, it is such a beautiful language, and I hope one day I can do it justice.

Thanks again for your feedback, please come back for the next one :-)

Cg

Thank you for your interest, I do think the Chinese language is very beatuiful, however, it is very difficult to learn. Good luck with it. Your vedio was very nice made and please continue to do so, lol.

Hello, i speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English. it is awesome that you are interested in learning Chinese (its harder when you don't have the similar system of language based) To be honest, i only understand what you said when you speak in English, good job tho! Keep in mind that it's important to pronounce every word separately. Keep on and have fun learning Chinese!!!

Thanks for your feedback! OK it is good to know that you didn't understand me, I will work on pronouncing every word separately, hopefully the next video I will do better!

Thanks again, and please come back for the next one :-)

Cg

I like your post.

Thanks, :-) do you speak any other languages?

Cg

I took one quarter of Chinese in college what seems like a lifetime ago. Really struggled with the four intonations.

But I love Firefly so some day I should at least learn to swear in Chinese. 😜

Yeah I haven't even learned about the four intonations, I am cherry picking from my Hello Chinese app. I'm kinda a ready, fire, aim! kinda guy :-)

Make sure to teach me some Chinese swear words when you learn!

Cg

Intonation (sentence- or phrase-level pitch variations) is a very minor matter in Chinese. Chinese tones (individual syllables) are much more important.

The Chinese in Firefly is a joke. Please don't take that as a model of any sort.

Of course they will understand.

Thanks for your confidence in me, however it is difficult to know if I'm pronouncing some words correctly. So it is hard to say certain words with confidence.

Do you speak Mandarin; or any other language?

Cg

I use memrise.com, it's pretty useful. I'll have to checkout hello chinese at some point. Edit: looks like I already installed it on my phone, just haven't tried it yet.

I'll check out memrise, I hadn't heard of them. Hello Chinese is so good you have to check it out; to tell the truth I haven't used half of its potential.

Not only does it teach you to write and test your pronunciation, it also has loads of written theory and you can learn about the structure of the language as you go on, if that's your thing.

Also there seems to be a new youtube video every week, and it's linked to an online forum where you can practice. Phew! Eventually I'll start using it more, for the moment though, it's more than adequate :-)

Cg

That's awesome that you've taken up Mandarin. I've been living in South Korea for a few years and know a little bit of Korean. Even when I say something with perfect pronunciation (at least I think so) Korean Native speakers sometimes have no clue what I'm saying. frustrating to say the least.

How are you learning Mandarin if you don't mind me asking?

Wow I've listened to Korean and it sounds very difficult :-).

To learn Mandarin I am using an app on my phone called; Hello Chinese. It is absolutely brilliant; it teaches you to write and within a few lessons you are saying some useful things. Plus it connects with your mic and gives you some speech practice as well, which is awesome.

Thanks for your comments by the way, I've been trying to answer all day, but Steemit has been down!

Cg

good to know, will have to check out that app. I've been using memrise as a way to brush up on languages, also a decent app. and yeah, steemit has been funky the last few days to say the least

I am sorry to say that my network is not working well even with the VPN, maybe I will watch your video next time😊

Shame, next time :-)

Cg

I got a kick out of this...great idea to get feedback :-)
Also, great to see you on a video speaking - I like connecting visually with who I've come to know digitally and to meet your adorable daughter.

😊Glad to be of service! Hee hee, I am dying to have somebody who can speak fluently assess me; it kind of feels like I'm taking an exam whereby I think I'm doing well, but teacher has gone on break!

Glad we could connect, hope it wasn't too jarring, I know it can be when you read somebody in your head, and then suddenly see/hear them.

Both of us will be back shortly 😊

Cg

not jarring at all although you're right it can feel that way sometimes! hope you find someone to give you feedback.

Self-teaching is a great idea! I would love to do same for Spanish language :)
Thanks! Btw, your mandarin sounds cool!
If you wanted to learn Russian some day, welcome on my blog.

Thank you! You should use an app called DuoLingo to learn Spanish, it's a great app and will teach you useful, practical Spanish. Russian is definitely on my list, I love the way it sounds and I think I would enjoy learning; plus then I could speak to people on Golos! :-)

Cg

Wow nice .very very (^^)congratulations

Cheers! Mandarin is so very hard to learn...

Yup, that's why it's so fun! :-) Although saying that there are lots of easy bits. Once you can count from 1-20, you then know how to say the days of the weeks and months, after learning just the words for 'day' and 'month'.

So January is month 1, and Tuesday is day 2, 50 is 5, 10s. So I'm liking that logic and it saves having to memorise days of weeks and months of years. Even the writing is beginning to slowly reveal itself to me. :-)

Cg

I like your attitude :) I have many ambitions of all the languages I want to learn, mandarin being the crown-jewel, but sadly you learn a bit slower the older you get, and right now I am doing some French, so the far-east (from where I am right now in Scandinavia) must wait a little.

Good thing about learning language is that you will probably not get senile when you becomes old, so hopefully we will still annoy the Steemit community with reasonably sane post many years ahead :)

Thank you... I do think we learn slower as we age, but that's only because we get out of the habit of learning. The more we do the better we get.

I must revisit French at some point; I was put off it years ago by some Parisians scorning my accent, which is silly really, as I wasn't learning it for them.

Funnily enough, from the little I know about French, I actually think Mandarin could be a good learning partner. The way they do their numbers is very similar to the French, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were other similarities, yet the vocab is different enough not to get confused.

Yes we will stay sharp into our old age, it will be many many years before the blockchain sees the back of us! :-)

What a brilliant use of the platform to solicit feedback like this! I started to learn Mandarin a few years ago but gave it up a few months in. Great job!

Thanks Eric,

Yes it definitely is a good use; and also I'm hoping it will keep me motivated to carry on. I can see myself going the same way as you if I don't practice with some human beings, so this is a perfect use for that.

How where you learning it; did you take proper classes or an app?

Cg

I was learning Mandarin from a CD tutorial in the late 90's. I've been using Memrise to learn a bit of French and it's working great!

What a good idea of using platform and youtube
Actually I am studying chinese. I hope I will be able to reply some writings in Chinese someday.

Have a nice day. I'll come again : )

Thank you for watching and commenting :-)

So you are Korean studying Chinese yes? Are there any similarities or is it totally different?

Cg

took Chinese in college but cant speak nothing but hello and goodbye now... :0

we do not have may mandarin speaking people here in miami

That's the problem, once you get to a certain level, you need to practise regularly. I think I've found a good site to do that, but I'm going to wait until I'm a bit more confident with the language.

Cg

Nice post

Thank you very much; do you speak Chinese?

Cg

Your daughter is so adorable. 你女儿好可爱呀 o(^▽^)o

Thank you so much! She is my darling nu'er :-)

Cg

Support and Good job. I am Chinese ( cantonese & mandarin spoken person)and I can speck English and Spanish. I understood some words in the video.

Where are you from ? I think you can find Chinese community in china town. :P
You know there is always a china town in a city.
Welcome to my blog.

Wow thank you Carson! It is good to know I am not saying everything wrong :-) Can you tell me which words I need to work on?

I am from London, and I don't live too far from Chinatown, however I think I need more practice and confidence before I speak face to face with Chinese people.

Thanks for your feedback, I will check out your blog!

Cg

How many languages do you speak or is this tour first time learning a new language?

I speak Spanish the best; probably classed as 'high intermediate' level, then German, basic/intermediate. I can understand Yoruba, one of the main languages of Nigeria, but not speak it. So now I am looking to add Chinese :-)

Cg

Wow! How do you say give me marzipan in german?

Haha, I had to look up marzipan :-) "gib mir marzipan" Haha, my German is not so natural, I have to warm up to it, whereas Spanish I find it a bit easier to slip into :-)

Cg

Now I can survive anywhere! Thank you!

Lolz, you're welcome :-)

Cg

Keep in mind that it's important to pronounce every word separately :)

Yes, this gets harder as the sentences get longer! So I take it you're a native speaker? Did you understand me, or did you need to wait for my English translation?

Thanks for the feedback! :-)

Cg

Im 75% Chinese. I find the accent a bit strong. Pronunciation of some words needs refinement. Kudos to you for wanting to learn Chinese!

Thank you so much for the feedback. I think my accent comes from concentrating so hard on the pronunciation.

Please tell me, what words should I work on; I think I know, but I would really value your thoughts.

Thanks again :-)

Cg

I'm not even chinese and I understood that! haha
No I'm kidding, it's still entertaining though :)

Haha, awesome, I'm glad I made you chuckle :-)

Cg

hahaha i dont know chinese but you sound funny, am glad you take time to learn something new in life, never give up, keep learning and eventually you will be better

Lolz, I sound funny to me too! I can't wait till I can have a decent conversation with a genuine, native Mandarin speaker. Thanks for your comments :-)

Cg

I can definitely understand what you were talking about. Very good!

Hello from here too ;) One of my best friends here in Copenhagen is Chinese so I can show her your videos and see :D I'm doubting myself the exact same way right now... Chinese is a challenge, but personally I find it much easier than Danish aaagh... :/

Haha, thank you; I can't wait to see what she says :-)

I have heard that Danish is pretty tricky :/

Cg

Danish is awful ('There's something rotten in the State of Denmark' :P -sorry fellas!) The grammar is silly, the vocabulary is based in English and German mostly so not that hard BUT.....it's like they have 2 languages - one they write and one they pronounce. A simple example of writing comparing to speaking:
Amagerbrogade (it's a street name) is basically pronounced 'Ama-bro-ghel'...so imagine that in nearly ALL words.........neat huh? :P :D
