the hard question for me is though, do I want to punish my children the hard way, like I had to learn it sometimes. I had received a slap here or there, and most of the time I earned it. But then again, we would have to ask ourselves, how did it make me feel, what alternative would have resulted in me improving my relationship to my parents. I don't know the answers but I just had to think of those questions reading your comment
My parents did much 'better' than their own parents did educate them, and for the education and culture and religion my parents have had. I would do much better to my own children (if I have any someday) with the 'better' education I got from my parents. I guess an immediate punish right after the some bad behavior is sometimes much better than the a psychological game of reward , but that depends on the context. These days lots of children can not be taught about respect for the other people because modern culture yet does not know how to teach respect besides using authoritative relationship that is also required between parenting and children.
