Negative visualization makes a great deal of sense when you break it down like that. Processing through negative emotions before they happen would make a person more prepared to deal with them when/if they come. And I'd like to think it would allow someone to live and let live, instead of staying in a constant state of anxiety.
Appreciating what you have can require a bit of imagining what it would be like to lose it.
