More clues that I might be a bot... :)

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Yeah, I've written about how I might be considered a bot by some people because when I really get into the zone I type quite fast. I could perhaps trigger false positives on some bot detectors. I have found my name on such lists before. The people had ruled me out as a bot, but I still made their list created by their bot detector.

Today I encountered this in IM chat with a friend and coworker. He actually described how I can almost be like a DDOS attack on a chat conversation.

I told him that I write something in IM. If there is no input then my brain keeps on going and thinking about what I just wrote and the previous input. This often leads me to think of something else. So I write that.

This can lead to large chunks of text in IM chats. Some who speak with me may feel daunted and not feel like interrupting. I am actually okay with that interruption as it is INPUT.

There is the concern that their input may be something that I just addressed while they were typing what they wanted to say, so by the time they press RETURN/ENTER on the keyboard it could result in me simply quoting something I had just written that I hadn't said by the time they started typing.

To this all I can say is stream of consciousness writing (what I do) is both a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing in that I can do a mind dump and write long pieces that people seem to find interesting fairly quickly. It is a curse in that my speed and how I approach it can make having a back and forth IM or Chat conversation challenging for some.

I pointed out to this friend that I do this verbally too, with the only true advantage there being I might notice someone has something to say and PAUSE. This is harder to notice in chat. I can often see the "X is typing" type of indicator, I wait, wait some more, the indicator goes away and they didn't say anything. This makes those indicators worthless for knowing when someone is speaking TO me. All it indicates is that the person is typing somewhere.

Now I could try to change how I approach things. There is really one problem with that. I don't really want to. This means I likely won't.

Just mark it up to one of my quirks. So for those of you that sometimes wonder if you're talking with a bot, following a bot, etc when you deal with me here on steemit. I am no bot. I am just a verbose stream of consciousness writer that can type fast. :)

Sort:

@dwinblood if you're a bot then you must be one of those Chinese super bots. ;-)

This is why I like posts and comments, most chats have far too many people contributing and it's difficult to differentiate who is talking about what.

From one bot to another, I salute you!

But I totally get it, all joking aside. I remember back in the days of message boards getting soft banned for "post flooding" because I had too much to say in too short of a time. So I spent a week in the cool-off box for being able to write dozens of completely formed sentences, joined together into paragraphs... covering relevant topics... but TOO QUICKLY!

I think we've had this conversation (or snippets of) before... of also being a "conversation stopper." Not because we are trying to STOP any dialogue... but because there is just SO MUCH to be said. Or-- as a friend once remarked "When I asked you what time it is, I didn't expect a dissertation on the history of time! Tone it down a bit..."

This is a great response, and sums it up rather nicely. That indeed seems to be the blessing/curse. It just depends upon how the person looking at us chooses to view it.

Is it because you post so much content on Steemit? I don't know, i'm not totally convinced you are not a bot, who can or would do that? @ironshield

At times when I've been very focused I've responded to comments and posted some big blogs at the same time and people didn't know how I did it. I was just in a zone. It is mostly the speed. I can be talking in comments with something and 30 minutes later make a post inspired by it complete with some custom images. So I started getting teased about being a bot...

I was serious though I did show up on a bot list once and yes at the time I was commenting and posting way more than I am now. I slowed down quite a bit, intentionally.

I can see why you are doing so well on Steemit. Speedy dedication. Steem on at 25X @ironshield

It is weird to think about but soon the technology really would be to the level that it would be impossible to tell if you're speaking to a bot. A.I. has come a long way and it is kind of crazy. Imagine having a clone army working for you.

where do you find these bot lists? I'm just starting to learn about the steem hierarchy and how to use your steempower - is there a reliable place to find accurate lists? thanks

I couldn't tell you. This was something I saw many months ago as a post made by someone. It was similar to @steemcleaners but by someone else and I do not remember who. I don't believe they kept posting them.

awesome thanks - are you on discord or any chats anywhere? I would love to pick your brain - you as someone with some influence in the steem world - on how you see the steem platform evolving and how the impact of bots, or different people essentially selling votes is going to impact the growth - let me know would love to connect - or drop me an email @ [email protected]

I prefer not to use Discord and chats as per my post we are commenting on. I actually prefer to communicate through comment and reply here as then there is a record of it on the blockchain which can be useful.

I recently jumped into a contest by some whales - the goal being to allow minnows or newer people some exposure by getting whale votes and some reesteem by some of the whales. This has really started by research into the inner workings of steem

Ive also had a few random people comment on my posts asking for me to check out their program/post where I essentially give them something on the smaller scale like an up vote, on the larger scale some actual $$ (BTC or Steem) in return for some exposure to their network.

There are also people that have created these programs where you get into them and bring people in for some compensation or you contribute to them for some response from a bot.

It feels to me - and again I still feel uneducated and new at this - but these trends will create a cap on steem where its not really dictated by people - but by peoples drive for $$. I still am a little unclear on how the flagging works - do you have any thoughts on this?

thanks for you time

These things have been going on OFF and ON for as long as I have been on steemit (about 13 months).

Some of them stick around, some of them die off. Some of them help for awhile then no longer seem to be as useful. Some of them start out good and then end up being a cash cow for the creators while not really helping the people that much.

It is kind of like life. I can't really tell you which ones to support. I also don't think there will really be a cap. Right now Steemit is artificially being slowed intentionally for adoption. Steemit Inc. has not advertised and they have not opened it wide for joining. In other words, the floodgates have not yet been opened. I expect big things to happen.

It is way too early to predict what any of those will be. There will be cycles though of ideas people already tried being tried by someone that doesn't know about previous attempts. This is again life. There will also be new things mixed in with the repeating cycles.

when you say slowing adoption are you talking just because they haven't advertised?

I know you are not a bot.

There are no bot which could recognise a sense in my bad English sentences

Or maybe, just maybe, your the best AI ever made ;D

And your implied point might be that we all are. :)

Life, is nothing more, than a hologram.

hey! cool post friend! :)

Strange world we live in: language skills somehow make people think you're an automaton.

Well as a programmer I know what someone might do to try to detect bots. The problem is that bots are simply a program designed to act like a person. So detection algorithms will always catch some people in the crossfire. :)

Just a regular bot?! If you decide to change career and become a voting bot, please let us know!

Okay, will do.

haha you are definitly not a bot :) don't worry, like you say it is input, and typing fast works in your advantage to turn the conversation to a specific direction, the direction you choose :)

Yes, but I can also plow right over the top of people when it is not my intention as well.

hahaha nice post :)
follow and resteem

Hey bot haha, although I find it easy to write, sometimes I wish I could just write a bit faster in chat rooms to turn the conversation the way I wanted to go.
