"inevitable" seems like conceding defeat to something that is, at the moment, far less intelligent than a human. (well some / most humans any how :-) )
I think we still have an opportunity to control them.....if we are awake enough to see it.

I think he only means that the advent of general AI is inevitable. Not that we will be slaves to it.
Are you sure?
From some stuff I've read it seems many are asleep to the world around them. :-)
Hopefully you are correct .
Well, he does mention he does not like AI, so I think he understands that it poses a danger. But the fact that they will exist is inevitable. Whether we will be slaves to them or not, remains to be seen. They can be used as a tool of epic accuracy, but like any took, it can be used for good and bad.
I for one do not think they are the end of humankind, at least not yet. But I do think they should be used cautiously, and be made open source so as to not end up only in the wrong hands.
I agree that some people are oblivious, however, I don't think it's quite the case with the op
Agreed.
And you are correct re open source I think.
I have more trust these days in a mass consensus than I do anything else ATM
Well, I don't think mass-consensus is actually a thing. But whenever power is placed in the hand of very few people, they tend to become tyrants. And even if they do, there's only so much a handful of people can do, so making it open source will make it faster to spot issues and fix them. Probably why crowd-sourcing works so well now, taxis, hotels, content, politics, now money, hell, even gene sequencing... all much more successful when it's not planned top-down.
So, I'm definitely no commie, but I'm not an anarchist either, some general direction should still be maintained. Elon Musk's AI kinda follows this idea, so there's that :)
