Schools in Oklahoma are beginning to install these new shelters into the classroom. They are bullet proof, can handle an F5 tornado and also be used for an earthquake shelter. I like that they can be used for a quiet space and tutorial area when there is no crisis going on. It looks like a pretty good idea to me. Check out the video and let me know whay you think about it.
The company is called shelter in place dot com. I have been to Oklahoma and the tornado shelter properties alone would be worth it to me. This is something that would have so many benefits besides being bullet proof.
I think this is actually a very good idea. I'm a HUGE weather/geology/geography junkie - have been since I was very little. One thing about tornadoes people don't realize is that the majority of fatalities that occur during a tornado are from people getting impaled by the debris; so, by making these things bulletproof it really serves a similar purpose in protecting children from wooden splinters, nails, shattered glass that is traveling over 100 mph. Doubling as an earthquake shelter is also very smart, especially in Oklahoma as they've had a increase in earthquake activity over the years due to fracking operations (this is something that's denied by the government but is painfully obvious when you study the data).
Another thing about tornadoes, eventhough storm prediction and warnings have come a long way, I don't think people realize how fast a storm can literally go from non-existent to a super cell producing a major tornado in the span of just a few minutes. Even with the absolute best warnings imaginable, there is no way to prepare for those worst-case scenarios where these shelters would be the most useful.
wow, its an interesting development in school safety.
I like this idea. I keep going back to the days when I was in school and the administration's best plan of action was to have us hunker down in the hallway with books placed firmly over our heads to protect us from debris. In hindsight, I'm not sure that was the best idea, and oddly enough, I never saw a single teacher hanging out on the floor with a book on top of her head.
Hmmm, well, me being the nit-picky devils advocate, always looking for a controversial angle (but I'm really a nice person!LOL!) It IS a good idea, and could serve well for those preppers and SHTF folks; But, isn't it SAD, that the idea of having to put something like that in a child's classroom is even being considered? Then I think, "How convenient for those trying to make money off of the sickness our country is plagued with."
Could you imagine if districts actually contracted to have one in EVERY classroom, who would really make a killing then? It reminds me of when kids had to do the duck and cover drills, with the city air raid sirens going off in the distance. Like we've gone backwards in time, and learned nothing in the last 60 years...
This is how my head works...LOL! I gotta live with it...
The first thing that actually caught my attention was not necessarliy the bullet proof capability but rather the tornado shelter aspect. I have lived in Texas and Alabama for most of my life and I would love to know there was safe place for kids when an f5 tonado is bearing down on your location. I am not for certain but I bet that was the original plan since this company is from Oklahoma.
It is a shame that we now have to consider things like this as an option for school kids against an armed intruder. The company is going to make a ton of money no doubt. I like this idea better than arming teachers. At least they can use the space for something else when there is no crisis going on. I appreciate and respect your “devils advocate” opinions. I think we need more people like you to speak up and generate more productive discussions. Thanks for reading and interacting.
Well that brings up another question about tornado shelters. Because Oklahoma is one of "those" states that has always had the possibility of devastating tornadoes hitting schools and so forth, haven't they already created bunkers and/or shelters? I would think it would be in the main plans when the school is being built in areas prone to them... Now I'm curious, one of these days I'll ask my cousin on Facebook; she lives out there. My mother was born and raised there too, and I know every home had one... whether that carried over into newer construction though, I don't know...
One good thing about a tornado is at least there is some indication or warning they are coming toward you. (Unlike earthquakes where I grew up)... But, we can't predict a psycho with a gun, and yes, this would be better than arming those teachers.
:)
You would think that they would have installed shelters by now but amazingly most have not. I know that the Chickasaw tribe will install a shelter for their citizens that live in Oklahoma. I would be curious to hear what your cousin has to say too.
We'll talk!Well, I will definitely let you know @givonwayne! Matter of fact, she works in the real estate market at some capacity.
