Toys that Take me Back

in #life8 years ago (edited)

These days time flies past - not only the days go by in rapid succession but the years seem to be shorter each time they roll around. With kids, work, family, obligations, stresses, the daily grind - life often feels like it's passing me by. Like I'm just an observer, not a participant in my own life.

Sometimes I feel... old!

Even though I'm not that old... I was born in the early 70's.

I suppose it's how you define old - or how old you feel. Lately, I've been feeling oldish and miss my youth.

Growing up I had it pretty good. My mother and father were not rich but I had what I needed and more. We didn't have lots of fancy toys and were not often spoiled, but I was loved and cared for... and I did have some cool toys!

Toys take me back to my childhood days, growing up without all the worries, obligations, stresses and pressures of adult life.

These are the toys that take me back to those awesome years...

Lego

I used to play with Lego non-stop. We didn't have bucket loads of Lego to play with but a few complete sets I was given on birthdays.

Space Lego was by far my favorite. My imagination had no boundaries and I would build all sorts of creations. But the first challenge was building the set.

I can still remember what it felt like tearing into the new box and opening the packets that contained the pieces. After making it I would build a whole city around it with blocks or any spare pieces I had lying around.

Smurfs

Who didn't have a few of these little blue men (and one woman) to play with when they were young? My favorite was Jokey Smurf.

Slinky's

Such a simple toy but lots of fun. My brother had one and we had slinky races down the stairs. So cool. We had the plastic tube version as well - they would roll through your hands

Cow Moo's in a container

I can't recall what these were called but I remember getting one from my parents. When you slowly tipped the container a 'Mooooo' sound would come out. Can anyone tell me what these are called?

ViewMaster

These were used until they were worn. I remember having about 4 or 5 slides of cowboys and Indians and some of wild animals.

Spiky Building blocks

Not as awesome as Lego by any stretch, but still lots of fun to play with. The cool thing about these block is that they would fit together in many different ways - you could build anything out of them.

Hubba Bubba and chips

(not a toy, but does take me back to my childhood)

All the pocket money I made doing the paper run would be quickly exchanged for these little blocks of sugary goodness and packets of crisps! I hid them in secret spots in my room so my parents wouldn't find them!

Commodore 64 PC

My first computer! Man was I stocked when we got this - addicted the first time I laid eyes on it ;)

We had a few games to play on it: Karate styled beat em up, space wars, racing games, Rick Dangerous (played out every level!)...

After that, we upgraded to a Commodore Amiga. I was already hooked on computers at this stage, but now it got even better. So many cool games to play!

So, that sure takes me back. Wish I could revisit those days. If even for a day...!

I suppose every stage in life has its charms. It was good to revisit the past - now back to the grind of every day adult life.

Life goes on... we are all getting older.

Did you enjoy this post? What were some of the toys that you played with back in your early years... which things take you back?

Leave your comments, I would like to read them.

Awesome post, love to reminisce too. I was a huge fan of Lego & Meccano and had a massive MicroMachines collection. My ceiling in my room was a museum of model aircraft suspended in dogfights; SR-71 Blackbird, F-14 Tomcat, Concorde, Biplanes, Harrier, Intruder, Viggen, Apache attack heli, Mirage, Mustang etc.

Then girls happened..

We grow up much to fast! Awesome toys you have/had... the little matchbox cars I remember playing with them!

Remember these:

Haha, totally! DonkeyKong was KING! The flip-open one had 2 screens, hahaha it was so awesome! My older cousins had the most epic Matchbox collections, also train sets. You don't see those anymore. I think I should go and get a model plane on principle and start building again.

Get back to your inner-youth ;)

That's the sprit! I think we never really grow up, and that's fine by me. Did you ever play a game on IBM's 640k called Sopwith? And the first Test Drive? It was SO legit!!

The graphics on that! My favorite game of all time was Rick Dangerous... so addicted

Haha, those graphics were the bomb! I don't remember Rick Dangerous.. I do recall Digger, Battle Chess, Prince of Persia. There has to be a market for these old school machines somewhere...

I am Groot! :D

I still have lots of space Lego from those days, my kids love to play with it now... multi-generational stuff!

I Love it !!! 😍
