So true.
It can become really problematic when we enter the stage of "self forgetting," which happens to those who become so wrapped up in what others are saying and thinking that they forget about having ideas, preferences and likes of their own. I believe it's called "other-referencing," in psycho-speak.
And that tends to end badly, because ultimately we know we're not being true to ourselves, and then we start to grow bitter and resentful... but because we're too worried about others' opinions, we turn those feelings inward, and become depressed instead.
