Attention Streamers! Read this post

Are you a streamer? Do you know streamers? Please read and share this post.

I'm currently exploring the feasibility to bring a restream.io type project for HIVE users. I gotta say, with all the things that restream.io offers for free, it makes this a hard market to get into. There are others too, such as castr, but each one has its costs and benefits.

After looking at the potential upsides and downsides, I'm left with a few questions, and the answers (or lack thereof) to these questions will be crucial in determining if this is a worthy pursuit. If you currently stream, even casually, please leave your answers in the comments below:

  1. Do you stream to @vimm or @threespeak?
  2. Have you or do you use a restream service?
  3. Do you pay for a restream service?
  4. What features are a must have (i.e. chat combining, announcement bots, platforms, etc)?
  5. Would you like to pay in HIVE for this service?

I think there's a way to make this work, provide free streaming to both Vimm.tv and 3speak.online, and make it affordable for users as well, but it's going to depend on what people expect, and if it's something that's needed to begin with.

Sort:

Sugarlumps!

Okay... Let's do this.

  1. I have from vimm, not 3speak...
  2. I've looked into ALL restreaming services (several times). While they DO offer free stuff... it was never what I needed because of things. Specicially, I'd LOVE to stream my shows to my personal youtube account (Topics & Tunes), but there are no free offers to do this... so I just didn't.
    • Currently, because mspwaves hosts from its own thang all the restream services (that I found) won't support it (for free). I could easily stream from youtube, facebook, twitter and twitch all at the same time though... I'm in a little bit different a box...
  3. No pay. I never felt good about adding MORE expense when income was little to naught... and because I didn't have any extra disposable income... I kinda do now.
  4. Chat combining would be the tits... maybe some templates that are easy to use. Platforms: ALL OF THEM!!!! (I totes don't know how hard this is.)
  5. Yes.

Streaming your shows may be a problem, as they contain copyrighted material and youtube has great detection methods and a shoot first ask questions later policy. It's definitely doable tho. Thanks for the feedback Carrie <3

Right, right... rules... blah.

I wonder if I could mute sound during songs ONLY to youtube? ...

You've given me a lot to think about. 😘

You wouldn't be able to selectively mute, but I guess you could beg for forgiveness rather than ask for permission.

-I stream to vimm but not 3speak (yet)

-castr

-yes I pay

-ability to restream multiple places, anything I can do to combine chats will be used as I am streaming to too many places as it is without having better integration.

-i would pay in hive, gladly.

Appreciate your feedback Eric. One more question, how many sites do you stream to?

Vimm, Mixer, Twitch, DLive and Periscope (for the embed). I can use vimm for the embed now. I pay to stream to facebook too, I think that will allow me to stream to 3 speak as well.

Do you stream to @vimm or @threespeak? - Yes - @vimm. I use castr restream service, vimm works great on there. @threespeak does not load onto services - works if you stream right to their site...
Have you or do you use a restream service? Castr
Do you pay for a restream service? I didn't want to, lol But yes.
What features are a must have (i.e. chat combining, announcement bots, platforms, etc)? Chat Combining, Multi Platform streaming, Embedding channels/shows, scheduling shows in advance. being able to quickly change thumbnails, content descriptions, and keywords) Crossposting abilities to other social outlets, tipping?
Would you like to pay in HIVE for this service? - Yes.

Embedding channels/shows

Could you elaborate on this? I know several platforms offer this individually (twitch, vimm, etc), and don't know what you mean in the context of a restream service.

Good point, not sure. I was just brainstorming features. I like that those platforms offer embedding streams.

  1. I stream to vimm regularly and dlive rarely and twitch once upon a time ago, 3speak I don't use.
  2. I'm considering using a restream service to add twitch back in, as the people are there
  3. I would pay a very small amount. (less then a VPS at Digital Ocean or Linode)
  4. Chat combining I would need to do one way or another
  5. Probably, certainly as a "benefactor"

Hope this info helps.

Appreciate the feedback!

Great news and a project I'd love to see happen, here's my feedback for ya :)

  1. Yes, I stream to Vimm but not yet to 3speak.
  2. Yes, Restream
  3. Yup, 19 bucks a month, but got a nice little deal the other day for only 13 bucks a month LOL
  4. I don't need all the bells and whistles, I just like to press 'Go' from one central location and it allows my stream to go to different platform (currently Vimm, Facebook and Twitter / Periscope)
  5. Absolutely! I'd rather pay HIVE in a project on the blockchain than Restream.

Hope this helps!

That helps a lot, thanks for the feedback!

  1. Vimm
  2. Yes
  3. Castr
  4. Chat overlay that combines chats, solid ingest server
  5. I suppose? I'm fine with fiat as well

I should also note that I have sent several emails from my Vimm email, as well as several tweets from the @vimm twitter account. They've gone unanswered. I started reaching out to them almost a year ago. Haven't heard anything. Despite several attempts to connect.

I assume they're not supporting them so people pay for their service, but I could be wrong. How many services do you currently stream to?

Just 3: Vimm, Mixer, and Twitch. I worked with @chiren to develop a chat overlay in-house because we did have one that would combine all three. That and it covered the big players at the time and was useful enough for everyone to warrant developing.

Nice. Thanks for the feedback, it really helps.

  1. I have done a test stream on 3speak and went to make an account on Vimm but their site was down at the time ^_^ Will be looking back into both it at some point though.

  2. I have indeed

  3. No, I'm currently a volunteer with no source of income so if a free version is provided, I try to stick to that.

  4. A way to sync/combine the chats together for sure, would make it easier for both parties. Things like bots and alerts would be nice additions too but what's considered important is very much each to their own.

  5. If it was a requirement and I had the HIVE, then sure. Would makes sense in terms of promoting HIVE in general. But if there was a free version, I would probably stick with that first until I managed to make enough HIVE to pay for a version with maybe more features ^_^

If you go ahead with it, good luck with the project!

Appreciate the feedback, thank you!

Not a problem ^_^ Keep us posted!

Do you stream to @vimm or @threespeak?
I currently stream to Vimm

Have you or do you use a restream service?
In the past I used castr.io because they offered 1 custom RTMP server you could stream to in their free package. And that went to vimm.

Do you pay for a restream service?
I do not currently.

What features are a must have (i.e. chat combining, announcement bots, platforms, etc)?
Any features are fine. Again I'm not a restreamer.

Would you like to pay in HIVE for this service?
That would be cool. Fiat also.

In the past I used castr.io

How many sites did you stream to when it was free on castr?

I want to say 4 , vimm, dlive,yt,stream.me and I think one other but it didn't last long. It's been awhile but those are the ones I think I streamed to.

  1. No i dont stream to vimm or threespeak at the moment ,but if i would stream to one of them then vimm <3
  2. i used castr but now i have my own private ngnix server on vps
  3. no
  4. Chat combining would be great
  5. If i would use it paying in hive would be nice .

Well hopefully we make this attractive enough to save you the hassle of using your own private VPS. Cheers, thanks for the feedback.

The VPS cost me only 5 bucks in a month and has 10 Mbit upload fair price for if you want to stream to 3 to 4 Plattforms :)
Also i can use the vps for other thinks like own teamspeak server :)

  • Do you stream to @vimm or @threespeak?
    Yes on @vimm
  • Have you or do you use a restream service?
I don't, but if I did I'd use a local configured nginx server that streams to multiple endpoints (restream.io and to the platforms that are not included in the free package)
  • Do you pay for a restream service?
    no
  • What features are a must have (i.e. chat combining, announcement bots, platforms, etc)?
Difficult to answer this as I prefer to write my own "features". But if I'd use a third party feature customization is a must
  • Would you like to pay in HIVE for this service?
    No (see answer 2)

That's exactly what I would do too lol. Thanks for the feedback!

Great minds think alike. Good luck with your project ;)

  1. Vimm
  2. I use restream.io
  3. no
  4. chat combining
  5. depends on how much you are asking

I know the reason you are doing the kind of poll cause restream.io has a weird rule about adding new platforms. Hear me out!

What i sorta like is how at least vimm has a feature where you can read Twitch, Mixer and Vimm chat with a special overlay that i simply open on my browser. Calimeatwagon found a way to make it go further with having your vimm chat go into discord and have restream relay to chats like youtube and dlive and that really works well for him!

Twitch and Mixer are too mainstream to not stream to and if your just a casual like me then that is all I care to maintain my network on those platforms as i work on adding on to my network with people of vimm. So what i do to stream to 3 platforms? At 1st i tried the paid version. I was able to snag a one year deal on humble bundle. That worked out since i was able to add VIMM to the list but once my year was over I can't stream to vimm anymore unless i renew. So what did i do? I ended up setting up a RTMP server that points to restream and VIMM. I use the trick i learned calimeatwagon so if i wanted to stream to dlive with restream i can at least have them chat it up. Lately I have only been restreaming when i am doing something "big" like trying out a new version of a game being in developement or when i am doing a minecraft series which i am about to do one soon. If i just wanna stream I tend to stream to whatever platform I feel I want to stream to. Lately I been streaming to VIMM cause i want to be noticed a bit.

You mention 3speak and honestly i just learned it had livestreaming a month ago and yet to do my 1st stream. If i were to stream to 3speak i want to at least stream to VIMM since both platforms are on the same blockchain so why not eh? Right now since 3speak is still newer to me as VIMM is even though i been using VIMM for almost a year now I am unsure of any special chat features 3speak has to offer like VIMM did.

Adding a lot of platforms is a pain in the ass if you can't have a proper way to keep up with chat. That is why i love how restream is getting better at the relays. At least with the discord trick we can add vimm to the restream chat and as for 3speak? If they have some deal where you can get their chat into discord like VIMM does then yeh i may start using 3speak. The less windows open the better!

If the HIVE restream service were able to combine all the chats into a client you use for an overlay, or to a discord chat via webhooks, and you got both vimm and 3speak free, and paid $2 a month per additional service you wanted to include, what would you think about that?

Better then $14 which is way overpriced. I understand that price for adding a RTMP server that may lead to 5+ other non related services that are compatible but i just want one added platform where the platform already has it's own chat relay.

There is one streamer i come in mind and I am trying to find a way to get in contact with him. He basically streams to ALL the platforms he can to spread the truth. I know for sure he uses restream and very active on dlive and youtube when he is live. The other platforms he has people chatting but we have no way of knowing what they are saying. He seems to have the chat open on those platforms but us viewers miss out on the conversation and never know how many people are even watching on those platforms. Now i know it may take some time and effort to make all the platforms chats to be compatible with each other but for $2 per service with the donations he gets from viewers he can afford the cost. Heck if this is to be a thing where if you use this special new restream on the hive blockchain the more activity you get from restreaming to compatible platforms the more rewards you can receive. Something like that can defiantly get people to use the service.

  1. Never done live stream but I'd like to
  2. No.
  3. No
  4. Yes interactive chats like the one on Twitter
  5. Yes I'd pay

Thanks!

  1. 3speak
  2. I've used restream.io once or twice but couldn't generally use it due to contractual agreements with twitch. (am a twitch affiliate)
  3. Nope
  4. mm donno.
  5. probably if I had a need for it.

With me personally I actually have the bandwidth to stream to multiple platforms if I choose to, but right now I don't really fancy dealing with multiple platforms even with a thing like restream.io.

I'm sorta just streaming to only 3speak in an attempt to promote the platform and also because I make more from upvotes in hive than I could ever make on twitch. I also have gotten more interaction over there too.

If I was more serious about streaming I probably should be using something like restream.io to get out there more, but I just do it for fun atm.

Having sat and thought about it a bit, I'd actually love to see a 'restream.io' for hive and decentralised streaming services. Or rather even just make restream.io but can pay with hive.

I've basically come to the conclusion that there is no reason not to stream to as many places as once.

I don't think we'll ever have all the free stuff or features of restream.io, which is what makes this hard to pull the trigger on, but I see opportunity if the conditions are right.

  1. Not yet, waiting for integration of vimm with restream (but it looks like you're in the works of creating an alternative, so this is awkward. I'd be down to check out what you come up with.)
  2. Yep, restream.io
  3. Nope
  4. Being a starter streamer, only thing I'm concerned about is chat combining.
  5. I'm broke. So it's my fault that I'm saying no.

Thanks for the response! We're looking at making vimm + 3speak streaming free, and then having competitive rates for additional stream addresses. Maybe you could make enough off hive posts to afford that, but even if not, the free services will still be available.

Oh I see, that's a nice model.

Maybe you could make enough off hive posts to afford that

Yep, you just gave me an idea of what to post about. I started learning Blender today, I can post my progress with that. Thanks!

Have you or do you use a restream service?
I use restream.io and Mobcrush for Vimm because restream.io is not free to stream Vimm.

Do you pay for a restream service?
When the service is on sale and budget-friendly for a year.

What features are a must-have (i.e. chat combining, announcement bots, platforms, etc)?
Chat combing, integration is a must because I stream on Twitch, Mixer,Vimm, and sometimes Periscope

Would you like to pay in HIVE for this service?
Yes, I would pay.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback.
