Moeraki Boulders - The dormant eggs of dragons

These strange boulders, up to 1.5m in diameter, on the South East coast of New Zealand evoke wondrous imaginations of dragons and other mythical beings. When will they hatch? What monster will they unleash upon the world?

Do you believe in dragons?

I see lots of long posts on Steemit. Blogs that people seem to have spent a lot of time writing. I won't use the excuse of "a picture speaks a thousand words", but the time and effort spent on photos like these from myself and other photographers is worth the shorter word count isn't it? It's good sometimes to hear a story behind a photo but other times the subject matter is best left to the viewers imagination.
Would you prefer to just look at photos without having to read an essay? Or would you prefer a short story to accompany the images?

Amazing picture, like always! ;-) I like the amout of text that you are posting with your shots, no need to write long stories, your stunning photos are speaking for themselves and always inspire me to try to improve my own skills!

Thanks so much! I'll keep my word count juuuust right 😉😁

Another great shot man! We just resteemed it.

Nice shot, man! They totally look like dragon's eggs! Very Game of Thrones-y.
I know I agree with you on the writing an essay thing. From what I have experienced, you are more likely to get more upvotes if you have a backstory or interesting info to share with the shot. But I think your shots really speak for themselves. It's really up to you. I love reading essays with photos as long as they're relevant! :) Cheers

I do try and add a backstory where possible. I think some photos need it and others are more artistic and open to interpretation. Travel photography definitely would benefit from more information. I don't want to feel like I have to write more just to chase upvotes though ;)

And I see two dinosaurs that showed their heads out of the water.

They may just be dinosaurs ;)

Beautiful Shot. Are those cracks in the rocks or seaweed? Looks like gold.. super cool image. @kieranstone

Cracks ;) They look golden in the right light.

This is one of the best compositions with Moeraki Boulders I ever saw! Although both stones are on the left it feels balanced.

Thanks so much! That's quite a compliment! I think the small collection on the right and distance helps with the balance

nice and dreamy mood, great photo ! Story behind picture is always nice, i don't really care how long the writing is.

I just know that personally I like to appreciate a good photo and sometimes hearing a story behind it can limit its magic.

And thanks!

I think the pictures are much more hard work than writing 150 words, to name a number someone told me I should write with my pictures, also many people just only look at the pictures and don't read.
Anyhow it would be nice if you told us wich software you use and what is your workflow ;).

You can always check out my website www.kieranstone.com for my YouTube tutorials in Photoshop! Some full edits you can buy and some shorter tutorials are free :)

Ok thank you I will check, I need to learn more about how to shoot night long exposure photos, I use Gimp as I am an amateur, but it can do most things Photoshop can do ;)

Dziękuję Ci

It's worth putting in effort to at least write a blurb about the images in the post; and lengthier explanations with the images that resonate with you.

I prefer not to read a manifesto but a few sentences will suffice.

And of course I believe in dragons. I see them on tv.

Gotta be real!!

TV never lies! And what better place to find dragon eggs than in New Zealand! I do agree that a photo with no words is a bit weak. But if I see a photo with a lot of writing and the start of the post is "First I got up and then I had a piece of toast..." I'm probably going to tune out.

Sounds like some people I know *ahem Martha! LOL

what a beautiull picture @kieranstone as u said some pictures say a thousand word and that is true but if it has a short story for me i think its even better

It does seem to be the consensus that some words or a brief story improve the enjoyment of the photo.

Thanks!

Ur totally right and that’s why i said for me a briefing is better and also a short story can show you the opinion of the person who put the photo may be he got a point of view other then mine so i can see what he thinks about it and compare it with what i think if u know what i meant.
Thank you for this positive conversation @ kieranstone

thank you too! It is good to see someone else's point of view on a common theme or location

That’s the way it should be to discuss and to know the others opinion but the important is that u’ve posted a really nice article and a very beautifull photo

Wow, absolutely stunning. I totally agree, the time put into images is well worth the shorter word count. But I post a lot of photos without many words, soooo.... hahaha.

Photos should be able to stand alone and convey a message without words. But a little direction is always helpful ;)

Yeah it's true, most people do like to be pointed in the right direction :)

I feel the image of "dragon" in the Western legend is different from the one in Chinese legend...

I think there are a few differences.

in this case, the photo tells its own story, but i love to read the photographer POV as well :)

I do try and add a little extra information ;)

Nice mate. Love the wider aspect of this one. Is it a few shots stitched or just cropped down?

Single exposure cropped. I liked the more pano feel to it too

I actually look for short stories and descriptions to accompany the images...they make the whole post feel more thoughtful and original. A long post isn't always necessary to show an acceptable level of effort...because it can be quite obvious to the reader your heart is probably not fully on board with the task. I suppose a balance between the two can be considered...say just enough to spark the imagination and further discussion.

The right amount is as much as it needs :) I usually try and get my point across in as few words as possible

I agree with you while everyone else is enjoying their breakfast, dinner or sleeping, photographers are out making magic which takes time and many images are taken to capture the perfect picture. Also the time to learn camera settings, post processing and composition is time intensive and some things can only be learned by experience. I'm not a fan of long posts regardless. I like straight to the point with no fluff. I'm the same way with books.

So the less reading the better! :) Just the information that is needed. Nothing more. Not even this sentence because it doesn't add any new information. Nor does this. Ok, I'll stop now ;)

LOL! exactly!

Love the hues in this photo!

How beautiful and peaceful, just heaven!

Thanks heaps!

Love the colors and the pano format!

Regarding the length of a post - I'm very visual. I like simply looking at photos. It's nice to see long posts now and then, and a description of a location is always appreciated - but I don't read long posts much more often than I write them. Since joining Steemit I've written more than in the last few years combined, but on most days I can't find the words, hoping that my photos will stand on their own, and it would be hypocritical to hold others to a different standard.

I can't say more. You just read my mind and made my thoughts sound )

This sounds exactly like me. Sometimes I think "Why do I have to write a bunch of stuff? Can't I just upload a photo and leave it at that?"
I've also written more for Steemit than I have for other social media platforms.

My favourite tag on Google Plus was #wordlessonwednesday ;)

Absolutely beautiful!
I am absolutely fine with just location description and maybe a bit of technique you have used (if there as anything special). A picture speaks a thousand words fo me

Good to know! I'm pretty much looking for any excuse to write less! ;)

love your works!

Thank you very much!

Grate Picture!

Thanks heaps!

I do now! Or, maybe there are future godzillas (godzillai?) in those eggs...

Or...maybe very big chickens! :D

YES! Let's go with that. ;)

Amazing job! Your photos are masterpieces! Can't wait for next post :)

Thanks so much! Glad you like them!
