First, we write down an equation to describe the question:
500m/t1 = v1
500m/t2 = v2
1000/(t1+t2) = 2v1
By simple substitution, we get:
2v1t1+2v2t2 = 1000
v2t2 = 0
t2 = 0/v2
, in which you need infinite fast speed to finish the last 500m
, which is, mathematically possible. (2SBD)
How about physically?
By the famous relativity, we all know that speed limit of anything is 300000000m/s,
But!! That doesn't make the run impossible.
Let's take the frame of reference to be the track, When you are running at c, the speed is calculated as c/t hence 300000000m/s, but not infinitely.
How about we take the frame of reference to be on the runner, things gets more interesting now.
Now the runner is at stationary, the track is moving towards him at c,
under this situation, the length of the track becomes 0, hence the runner can finish it in zero second.
But!, due to length contraction, the runner actually only moved 500m in tv1, so the average speed is still, v1.
It is an impossible action to be performed physically :) (3SBD)
Thanks @dreamzchm @rycharde @doughtaker @sighanchi @doughtaker @kenchung @point @math-trail @improv for participating!
The 2SBD trivial solution prize goes to @kenchung (First to come up with v2 = infinity!!~~
The 3SBD tricky solution prize goes to the only one mentioning relativity with explanations for possibility @point
More and more of tricky questions are coming!
See you next time !:D
@happychau123 thank you for steeming my brain and my wallet.
Your puzzle appears to be very simple, but when one looks at the math the solution becomes very strange. I enjoyed it. Your challenge is awesome.
Thank you for the 3 SBD surprise.
Looking forward to your next challenge.
Glad that you loved this kind of "easy.... oh wait, so weird" questions
I'm surprised that you got my hidden answer about relativity :)
I'm a little surprised someone didn't post about that sooner than my almost too late post.
I'm preparing another post and would like to put a link of this page in it. Would that be ok with you?
Sure, I'm very happy with that :)
I want more people to check out this weird question ^_^

what do u mean haha?

I'm still trying to get the 1st 500m. Then we'll see!
What's that :)?
oops
Well, I'm going to spend an infinite amount of time traveling the first 500m. Therefore, my speed will be approaching 0m/h. If I maintain that speed, I will also travel the second 500m in forever. But forever twice is still just forever, so I have effectively doubled my speed, just like you wanted me to.
interesting appraoch :)
but I cannot agree with x=2x while x tends to infinity
although they are both infinity, but algerbarically they are bot approaching each other
thanks for your award! :) looking forward to your next competition :)
Thx for participating :)
