Exercise is almost always good! I'm too fat to be any good at running but I love walking and hiking in scenic places.
It's wise choice because if you have extra weight then it will ruin your knees. Walking and hiking is good. You can try running very slowly on well cushioned surface like grass
Yes true - the extra wear and tear would destroy them.
