#MindfulMonday - Dealing with Frustrations and Problems in a More Mindful Way...

The ideal time to be mindful is when you’re encountering a problem or feeling frustrated. But this is usually the hardest time to be mindful for you may be feeling a lot of emotions all at once.

You may want to blow up and let everything out but that could be more harmful then helpful. Instead, try to deal with your frustrations and problems by staying mindful.

Here’s 4 tips for doing that…

  1. Start with awareness.
Often, we want our emotions to be heard, so start by acknowledging how you feel. Try saying something simple to yourself like, “I’m angry that (person) did (action)”. Take a few deep breaths. Acknowledge other emotions you feel bubbling to the surface like overwhelm, anger, sadness, jealousy, etc.
  2. Analyze your emotions.
Where are these emotions coming from? Are they linked to something that happened recently? It’s important to pause and ask yourself if your emotions are in proportion to what happened. Sometimes, we react to a minor incident because we’re not acknowledging a problem in another area.
  3. Think it through.
When your frustration or problem has to do with someone else, think about it carefully before you decide to confront them. Could it be that you’ve been projecting your emotions onto someone else? Can you explain how they feel? Are you willing to step in their shoes for just a moment to look at this situation from their perspective?
  4. Look for alternatives.
Sometimes, a frustration or problem comes along that can be handled easily. Ask yourself if you can change the situation. Ask yourself what your choices are and which one is the best response.
  5. Reach out for feedback.
Reach out to a group or community that you’re part of. Your group can give you the benefit of several different perspectives and it can be helpful to know that you’re not the only one dealing with these problems. Or if you have a coach or mentor reach out to them.

Don’t berate yourself if you don’t handle every frustration or problem mindfully. Instead, acknowledge that you could have dealt with the situation differently and move on. Mindful living isn’t about getting it right every time or being perfect. It’s about living in this moment.

Yup, it is often the hardest moments that are the best for mindfulness and will benefit the most from it. You have put this so well and thank you for sharing your tips about how to practice it. Much love! 💚

Awesome! Thanks so much!

You offer great advice on mindfulness and how important it is to knowing ourselves. It's human nature to recall the past and dream about the future, while the moment we're living is always "what's happening."

How true! And we really miss out when we aren't present in our moment to moment life!

Thank you @porters, that is really applicable with my situation right now

Glad to be of help!

Sometimes it really takes a big effort, deep breath to try be mindful in this uncaring world filled with selfishness.

I definitely find good advice in what you say, something we have to keep working at @porters

Definately somethng to keep working on! I'm enjoying the #Mindfullife discord community in the @naturalmedicine server here. where we support each other as we grow in conscious awareness and even hold group meditation with discussions afterwards! Great to have those reminders!

Thanks for links, really finding time tight at the moment, so perhaps one day I will wind my way over.

There are times that it would be easier to trash it all and start anew, but, most times, I find it worth the effort to sort it out and deal with it.

If we ignore what we don't like, it will come back and haunt us for the rest of our life. Breathe. Oh, so right!!! Then breathe again!

Wonderful post that gives an upward motion to negative thoughts. What a win! Thank you for your thoughts and have a most wonderful day!

Yes and if you can deal with it sooner than later or even catch it as it's arising before things have a chance to escalate. Working with young kids I'm constantly checking in for what emotions are arising and being a calm supportive type for those youngsters! Kids help to keep you in the moment any ways for that's where they mostly live!

Absolutely!

Well written. It really hits me, when I always react the opposite way

I always find it's good to have reminders to keep us on the path of conscious awareness, being more present in the moment!

But when all else fails go back to bed and sleep it away

Ha! Ha! That made me smile! Yes! Start fresh in the morning! or even just getting away from it for awhile so you can come back with a fresh outlook!

I will be bookmarking this one. These are some wonderful tips. I especially #4 Look For Alternatives. Too often we think "this" is the only way to sort out an issues, but if we stop and think it all through we will see there are other ways to approach an issue.

Great post, love the formatting.

These are excellent suggestions, @porters! I wish I could have a little Mindfulness Fairy pop up on my shoulder and remind me of those 5 tips every time I get frustrated! Also...

mindful here comes a thought.gif

I've been enjoying the reminders with the #mindfulMonday posts and the #Mindfullife discord community in the @naturalmedicine server here where we support each other in our conscious awareness - good thing to have and such a wonderful group of people!

Thank God for feedback

I like this

Look for alternatives.

I look forward to this everyday unfortunately...

Thus, when we learn to handle situations in a conscious way our life improves much more, I have tried to be less impossive on some occasions where emotions get out of control and do not let me think logically and calmly, and I feel that my life has been improving a lot, still missing, but we are working on it!

Wonderful that you are seeing improvements! Definitely something that you've got to keep working on and developing!

I am a fan of number 5 on your list my friend.
A hard life has taught me many things on how to cope and your advice here are all splendid reminders.
My way to cope is to never take things personally, as most often the accuser have something to prove to themselves (and others) and you are just a convenience.
Blessings!

How true! And words well spoken! Life does seem to be much better when we don't take things to personally or think that we are the center of the universe - having a little humility!

Excellent strategy, we are not our emotions, so need to simply distance ourselves from them as an observer and thus disarm them.

Yep! I found it's what you focus on is what you give power too! If you focus on your negative emotions you are giving them power and they can get out of control. Personally I don't want to be ruled by my emotions!

Good advice, a pause and a deep breath can go a long way towards recentering yourself. Hard to do in the face of emotions, but exactly when we need it the most.

Good advice. I know I should practice what I preach but mindfulness is something that should become as regular in our daily routines as brushing our teeth.

How true! I like to start my day with a morning meditation and when I'm working with young kids I find it really important to stay in the moment and be mindful! My meditation practise helps me do that.

I absolutely agree that when facing frustrations, mindfulness is a great tool to have.

You may want to blow up and let everything out but that could be more harmful then helpful.

This was the case when I put my epic 'fighting the man' comment up on the recent steemit.blog post. At first it was very reactionary, but I pulled myself away from it and came back after going to get a cuppa tea and re-worked it into something constructive rather than negative. That's the great thing about learning a way to bring you into the moment and out of your thoughts. Although, it can vary how much you escape from identifying with those frustrations:

Mindful living isn’t about getting it right every time or being perfect. It’s about living in this moment.

Even when you don't fully succeed, it's usually a more considered and productive action that you end up taking :)

Lots to think about in this post @porters :)

Hear! Hear! Putting the effort forward to develop a more mindful life , a fuller life, living more in the moment!

Good points. I guess I've been mindful all my life and didn't know it. I follow a similar strategy. It works pretty well for me.

Words to live by @porters, excellent post I hope everyone reads this. 🙏

Beautiful reminders @porters. The one thing I have become a little preachy on.

Don’t berate yourself if you don’t handle every frustration or problem mindfully

I am on a mission to get people to stop beating themselves up. Life is hard enough without taking swings at ourselves. I know I am my own worst enemy. I am working to fix that.

I hear you! Fortunately I haven't been plauged with that too much but I hate to see it in others - it serves no purpose at all!

I'm guilty of over-reacting 99.99% of the time. To make it even worse, it's usually caused by a misunderstanding or impatience on my end. Being mindful really is so important! But also, I think so is being respectful and willing to communicate.

Mindfully feeling through our frustration is magic. Feeling, and observing the feeling, where you are not so immersed that you are overwhelmed. Yes, it's life changing stuff.
