STEEMZINE #13 - You Are Not Your Past

in #mistakes8 years ago (edited)

Often our pasts comes back to haunt us at some stage or another. They creep up on you when you least expect it and least want it.

When this does happen it can be difficult to move forward and you can find yourself asking "Will I ever be able to move on from this"...it happens to everyone of us at some stage or another in life.

It may come in the form of a partner, a mistake or a bad financial decision. The past can take on many forms and when it does rear it's ugly head, it's important you face it with the knowledge that you are not your past and you as an individual progressed. You've advanced in life and moved forward since the time when it was your reality.

Sometimes this is easier said than done. We attach so many ideas and beliefs regarding things that have been, we paint them with our own brush.

The actual event, person or thing takes on a whole new world. It morphs from an experience to a perception of an experience.

When you find yourself confronted by the past. Please remember it is just another moment in time and just as you did previously, say hello and thankyou for the reminder of where you have once been and then close the door once again.

It belongs where it came from....the past

There is no point in regretting something. If you make a mistake in your life, as everyone does then learn from it. You will find that the most successful people prefer to define themselves by their mistakes and what they learned from them rather than their successes.

You don't grow from constant success, you only learn from your failures. The only real tragedy is not learning from your mistakes.

@mister-t fail forward as they say!

Once had somebody ask me if I had any regrets in life. I replied to them no, they were shocked. I said every decision I've made in my life, good and bad, has molded me to whom I am today. Be proud of your past and mistakes. Own them.

@rem870man could not have said it better!

I can't say I agree with that. I have regrets about people I hurt in the past, especially if it scarred them emotionally in some way. I have become a better person as a result, but I would undo many things in the past that hurt others.

Interesting take @rem870man has a point though. We all have an impact on people without having a negative impact on someone or something, you wouldn't know or learn the lesson not to do it. I understand the ideal world where that person wasn't you who caused the hurt. But, I think generally speaking we all just do the best we can in a given situation and sometimes that is not always the best for those around us. But I have similar moments @goose so I can relate.

I understand where @goose is coming from. There's people I hurt years ago that I still think about today. Do I regret hurting them yes, so I have any regrets in my decision making? No, that terrible decision I made rounded me into what I consider a good human being today.

You are not your decisions or regrets, so be in the moment, I say!
Enjoy!
