Tom Hanks is one of the biggest stars of our generation; there is no denying that. Although he has had some duds I believe this is kind of unavoidable because not everything can be a top hit with award-winning scripts. However, when you look at his anthology of films over the years you will see that for the most part, things he is involved in are, more often than not, pretty good. This can be applied to critical and financial success as well. Enter "Splash" which was a massive money maker an a very entertaining film before most of you were alive.

I love when i can find these things in Thai
The storyline here is kind of based in fantasy as Allen Bauer (Tom Hanks) grew up on the Cape Cod seaside and was in a boating accident as a child and while in the water is rescued by a young girl. While he has memories of the encounter with this girl being a mermaid, his family are able to convince him that the entire encounter was a hallucination brought on by trauma and he goes on with his life.
Later on as an adult he is yet again involved in a life-threatening water-bound accident and is rescued again, but this time when he comes to he is being kissed by a beautiful naked woman, who cannot speak and flees when he tries to communicate with her.

This is not a spoiler as it should be evident by the poster that mermaids are involved in this. The trailer is also very clear about this very major aspect of the film.
Time goes by and things happen that result in the mysterious fish-woman coming to find Allen at his home in New York City. A love story develops in an absurdly fast pace and some drama and adventure that while corny is actually very entertaining. The true love situation in this film was just one of many unrealistic situations that was planted in my mind as a young person and this is why I am still single: I'm waiting for a mythical creature to come into my life :P

Daryl Hannah was one of the hottest stars (by "hot" i mean hot and not necessarily critically acclaimed) of the 80's and I'm surprised that this film was able to maintain a PG rating despite having multiple butt shots throughout. The 80's were a time of very heavy censorship but I suppose the fact that Disney was the parent company that made this film probably had some influence over the censor board or whatever they are called. They go full frontal as well but her long hair is in the way of aspects that would land the film an R rating for sure.
This trailer is hilarious not because of intentional comedy but because it is a time-capsule. This was likely considered to be a wonderful trailer with high-production value but today seems like something that some teenagers made for a school project.
This film went on to make it's budget back 10 times over and really solidified Tom Hanks as a top actor; a reputation that has carried on to recent time. It also features a great performance by the late John Candy and since I think most of you are quite young, you may not have had the good-fortune of seeing this man act at all while he was still alive. While not nearly as famous as the other two Eugene Levy is one of my favorite supporting actors in comedies of all time. Overall, this is a real gem from the 80's and comes highly recommended by me. Good luck finding it. :)
It's been a long time since I've seen Splash. I remember that I really liked it when I saw it as a kid in the 80s since I was a big fan of mermaids at the time. It makes me think of Tom Hanks movies like Big and Joe Vs The Volcano which I also really liked as a kid lol.
Tom had a ton of great films in the 80's. He was as much an icon then as he is now... although i think in the 80's his roles were far more comedic than now and that is understandable.
Agreed. I think his real turning point into more dramatic roles came when he did Philadelphia in the mid 90s.
you know what? I think you might be spot on with this.
Some of the best memories I have growing up are of watching movies with the family. My mom loved this movie. Daryl Hanna had the look too. So hot but she also had that quality of innocence that we don't see much today. Two thumbs up. 👍👍
Big was the first Tom Hanks movie I watched and and still recall him chewing down on a miniature corn. I suppose they have to all start somewhere and it wasn't that bad a film for it's time.
ha! when you said that I immediately flashed back to the scene at the gala event he was attending. Great stuff!
Heck yeah, Daryl Hannah! I was 14 when I watched that flick, and first saw her on screen. And she immediately became the stuff of my fantasies. 😀
although i don't remember... I would imagine that my mother stood in front of the TV until there was no more Daryl butt for us to see. It was a great film. I have super-fond memories of it.
It was jaw-dropping to see that much skin on a Disney flick.
Too bad the made-for-TV sequel, Splash, Too, didn't have the same effect.
And, LOL at your mother!
yeah my mom tried to protect us from a lot of things back in the 80's. Conan the Barbarian was an epic film and we really wanted to see it, but before we could my mom watched it live on HBO with my dad and they paused the record button anytime there was sex or nudity on the screen. So we missed vast parts of the film such as the throne room at the end where pretty much everyone is naked. So as far as 10 year old me was concerned Arnold and co just completely skipped that entire room and had a face off with James Earl Jones on the balcony straight away.
If you don't know what I am referring to it was a pretty massive battle but there were far too many bewbs in it for my mama's liking, so we didn't get to see it.
Hi there. I am a big fan of Tom Hanks, but I haven't heard of this movie till now. In which year did this movie get released? Have any idea? Anyway thanks for letting us know about this new fact.
nineteen eighty four
Well, you can Google it instead of asking for an idea about when it was released. ;)
I love movies of the past, especially the 80-90s. And then I saw the movie “Splash,” with Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks starring. And of course, I decided to look at it. A reference comedy about love which is worth seeing in order to get a positive charge and a push to look for love, and if it is next to you, then look doubly
PG back in the day was different though. This was before PG-13 was around and the realized they needed to make another category that stuff like this could fit into. I think part of the reason this movie was so successful was just because Hanks is such a great actor. If you look at the plot and the general premise of it, it kind of seems ridiculous. It ended up being fantastic though and I think a lot of that has to do with him.
