Once upon a time, on March 31 IT Trailer was released and it set the internet on fire with over 197 million views in its first 24 hours alone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_viewed_online_trailers_in_the_first_24_hours). Why am I bring it up now? Because some people and even professionals find the successes of the movie surprising when they shouldn’t. The interest in the movie was there months ago.
Moreover, moviegoer have also proven that clicks on trailer do translate almost accurately to box office numbers. Now, even though the IT trailer has more views than The Fate of the Furious , Beauty and the Beast and Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailers (all billion dollar movies), I don’t think it will make a billion dollars, but it will make blockbuster numbers instead of horror movie numbers.
It seems like people who predict box office earnings are surprised that the movie will properly open with $100 million dollars in the U.S alone, when all the previous signs were there. Based on a popular book by a successful writer, most watched trailer of all times, no movies to compete with, no people complaining that this is an unnecessary remark, this movie has everything going for it. I don’t see why the prediction even started with around $50 million dollars for the entire weekend.
IT beat out Deadpool ($12.7) for best Thursday night debut of an R-rated movie with $13.5 million dollars in the U.S. It probably won’t open higher than Deadpool, but it made $51 million dollars in one day so it could and probably will open with around $100 million dollars in the U.S. It will be the highest opening for a movie in September, the highest opening for any horror movie and the second highest opening for an R-Rated movie. Worldwide IT made $76,700,000 in one day (data from boxofficemojo.com) so those global numbers will end up being impressive as well (although it is making less money overseas for now).
So next time you see a headline regarding trailer views, know that they mean a lot, they mean money.

Interesting take. I never paid attention to trailer clicks. I agree that this film will likely do well. I think the initial ratings are being driven by the same fanboys who have been clicking the trailer. But I don't think it will drop significantly. Maybe high 7s when the dust settles. Maybe even 8.
IT trailrt clicks got headlines, very impressive headlines, it even passed Thor: Ragnarok in reviews numbers so it was a pretty big deal. I don't think that horror movies have funboys, I just don't think that that definition works. Rotten Tomatoes can be manipulated for the first few days and it was, started with 100% now it's an 88%. 90% liked it on the first weekend makes sense, people want to enjoy what they watched. On IMDB it has an 8.2, and it will drop below an 8 in the end. I think this movie will easily be the highest grossing horror movie of all time, it might even make it to half a billion. So far the highest grossing horror movie is The Exorcist with $441,306,145 (not adjusted for inflation).
love the movie concept always
