As promised I'm back with a list of 5 underrated female singers, following the article from last weekend, when I chose 5 male artists. This time, the Teddy bear is helping me.
Why did we choose these artists ? According to the originality and their voice . How did we judge their originality ? Probably by having as models songs that I've heard in the past.
When we hear a new song, in our brains we recognize certain sounds , we assign them a meaning and we complete the information, but , as you know , the beauty of the song lies in its originality .
The songs chosen have in common voices with a timbre out of the ordinary . They are good compositions that approach themes of love , friendship and life. I consider them to be seductive , fun , exciting or fun because of the sequence of tonal heights, timbre or rhythm .
👍 Ella Eyre
She's a british singer and songwriter. One of her biggest accomplishments were the collaboration with Rudimental in 2013 for the single "Waiting all night" and the debut of her album in 2015.
She has a Jamaican descent and she originally was a swimmer. She also collaborated with artists like Wiz Khalifa and Tinie Tempah.
👍 Izzy Bizu
She is a british singer with Ethiopian descent. She released her first EP in 2013. She collaborated with Sam Smith and Rudimental, supporting their UK tours.
Her music is influenced by the music she grew up listening to, like Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, but she said that her newer models are Amy Winehouse and Adele.
👍 Jess Glynne
Many do not know that she is the voice in the song " Rather be" , by Clean Bandits . Most often we pay more attention to the person who released the song and not to the ones who are featured in it . This is also my case . I found it while I was writing this list , then to find that out .
Obviously that the ones living in England are not included in this discussion, considering that Jess Glynne is a british singer and songwritter.
In the past she did what we all want to do, she traveled the world.
Her songs charted many times in UK and she was also invited to join xfactor as a judge, but she refused the offer.
👍 Nneka
I've been listening to Nneka's music for 6 years and I cannot get enough of her timbre. She has a special technique and her songs are really inspirational.
She has a Nigerian descent, she's a singer, songwritter and her genres are soul, R&B and reggae. Her career started in 2003 and she collaborated with many artists including Sean Paul and Ziggy Marley. Her single "Hearbeat" was remixed by Chase & Status and Rita Ora.
She often sings about poverty, war and capitalism.
👍 Selah Sue
She is another singer that I've fallen in love with about 6 years ago , with the release of her first single " Raggamufin " . This song might sound familiar to you , like Crazy Vibes and This World .
She is a belgian singer and songwriter, she is not associated with any record company and she made a duet with Cee Lo Green for a song called Please.
Her success was great in the early years after her debut , but recetly, her songs have not reached as many listeners .
This is one of the latest songs released by her. Listen and be patient until the chorus , believe me you'll be amazed by her voice .
Honorable mentions
Melody Gardot
I hope you enjoyed listening to these songs. Next week I'll post a top of 5 underrated bands, so stay close.
Do you have any singers that you would like to share with me?
Don't forget to follow for more!
I enjoy Sny Snootles quite a bit.
I listened to a sample of each. I'm old and I prefer aggressive music from the 90s... but I do have a soft spot for some poppy stuff that I can mention to my students so I can fool them into thinking I'm cool. Jess Glynne seems like she would fit in this niche. I'm going to to go check out some of her other stuff. Thanks! Just curious but what's your opinion of Kate Nash? The school I teach at has a pretty high quality radio station that the kids run. Some of the DJs like to play her stuff. I realize her songs are pretty old now... but they are new to me. It seems like at some point she completely changed her style from clever poppy to retro screaming punk (I prefer the clever pop stuff).
I knew her old songs and didn't know about her changing to retro punk. Just searched on the internet. Her old stuff is good. Check on Katie Melua, Caro Emerald and Norah Jones. They are from around the same period with Kate Nash.
Just saw the gave me something video. Great video.
Nice work, we need more clean cut, entertaining articles like this on Steemit, especially in music. I think you'll enjoy my article on Folk Music: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@brownsgreens/why-folk-music-never-dies-words-from-band-leader-of-smith-house
I have recently watched the movie "20 feet from stardom" about great singers who did not manage to have a great career. I highly recommend it. It is really moving and the music is fantastic.

Great! Thanks for the recommendation. I'll find the time to watch it. :)
You will love it!
Great! I had only heard of Melody Gardot before. I really liked Selah Sue! In return I give you Laura Mvula.
Thanks for sharing! She's great!
I like women singers in rock bands. Like Paramore
I also like Paramore, but they are a band though... Next week I'll make a list with 5 bands. :D
Will have to check these out! Have you heard of Maria Gadu? Listen to 'Shimbalaie' it is a beautiful song. Thanks for sharing @diana.catherine!
Yes, I've heard before the song "Shimbalaie". It's really a good one, relaxing and warm. :) Too bad I don't get any of the words, but I'm sure they are kind.
