An "institution" is coming to an end, and it's really going to bum out that one kid on your bus with the NOFX patches on his Jansport.
In a statement that was more a long-winded rambling misunderstanding and misclassification of the basic genres of music, rather than a useful piece of informative press release, founder of the Vans Warped Tour, Kevin Lyman, has announced the 24-year-old Vans Warped Tour will not be returning for another national tour after 2018.
Cited were flagging ticket sales and band attendance, which I think becomes rather self-evident when one takes a look at the 2018 lineup and does a "have I heard of this band" check and a "is this band only a special guest for two dates" check.
Honestly, aside from some long-time exceptions who have been with the tour forever like Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake, this is a highly disappointing and borderline musically irrelevant and obsolete lineup. I'm inclined to take them at their word regarding lagging ticket sales and band participation.
In case you can't tell, this wasn't a show I ever was inclined to buy tickets for. In general, I don't like giant festivals like this. When you have 50+ bands, each is playing 2-5 songs, if that, and boy are they bored by the end of the tour's run. You're also dealing with multiple stage and simultaneous performances, no seating, and the general haphazard nature of open lawn festivals.
Plus, they just go on...and on. And on.
Regardless of my personal feelings on the concert, it was certainly an institution and launched a great many bands, some of which didn't even completely suck. It's a bit of 90's nostalgia gone to see it go.
On the plus side, perhaps this will lead to Less Than Jake charging a more reasonable fee next time they are in my neck of the woods.
Honestly, you'd think a "punk" tour would be busy hiding the Katy Perry connection...

Laugh worthy. Cringe worthy.
I harbour a secret katy perry pop fetish, don't hate. Hear me roar!
Katy Perry has been on a steady downward slide for years that has been painful to watch. I'm not saying that as a hater, but someone who appreciated her as a sugary-pop act that was OK. California Girls/TGIF/Birthday/Roar and the like weren't going down in music history, but they either had a catchy riff somewhere or something interesting happening in the video (Birthday, in particular...)
Unfortunately, I can't even try to defend the KP videos I linked above even as cotton candy nonsense pop. They are just painful. Swish Swish is the opposite of self-aware and the only bearable part is Nicki.
IMO it's been amelodic trash since Dark Horse.
Wow, that was way too in-depth.
Honestly, if hard pressed on a sinking ship, I would have to choose Taylor Swift and push Katy off the boat.
Man that would be the toughest call of my life.
Also way too "in-depth" at least for Katy...
:) thank you nice yes photo:
?
Those sneakers are way too cool!!
When I ask myself, what are my shoes missing...I often think, "a narwhal-like horn protruding 4 inches from the tongue."
Oh yea, you'd be the envy of the Universe!!

Proof of Nigerian prince's death or no deal, man. Trust me, I've done this a bunch before. I always get the proof of the prince's death and the will, before I send the cash to redeem it.
ooh,, OMG
I'm old. I don't know any of those bands. I also don't wear vans. I liked KP back in the day though. And summer music festivals.
I really hate to see such an iconic event come to an end. With the lineups that we have received over the past few years though, no wonder the ticket sales have declined. This used to be a great event. I would like to see Simple Plan and Taking Back Sunday one more time though.
really good one ....it..
Nice your post friend
Honestly, vans warped tour failed to evolve. With major festivals cashing in millions of dollars with state of the art performances and production. It was a great getaway to pretend to be in middle school again but everyone grows up from that phase. The emo kids of today are into deep house and techno and less into heavy metal and rock bands. I’m not saying in anyway that vans should adopt mainstreem music like edm and hiphop because it would go against the festival’s brand, but warped tour was in a state to be a trend setter. Instead of leading the way for rock bands it focused more on revenue from booking an extensive summer festival tour. They watered down the brand, and forgot to create an exclusive experience. I would love to see warped tour’s return in the future with an added emphasis to bring rock back into the mainstreem.
I think I am going to go this year lol just for old times sake - it's not really about who is playing (you can't see all the bands anyway) as long as a couple good bands will be there, it's mostly about the experience.
Have you heard of Rockfest in Montebello?

This was so on point. I was the kid with the Jansport & NOFX sticker and I went to Warped a few times to see PUNK. Sorry to see this guy congratulate himself on his birthing of pop punk....gross....the very thing that ruined this festival.
