It does still work provided you have an ample time to learn whatever that thing you are faking.
I once faked my resume about being good in a programming language I honestly only know the basics of. Since I only know the basics, all I could do was flavour up and or spice whatever words that I want to convey and they bought it. Afterwards, I tried my very best to learn all about it in case they might have noticed. After a few months, I kind of get the hang of it.
So yeah I guess that statement does work provided you have time and is willing to really learn whatever that thing you are faking
