The strangler fig (genus Ficus) is definitely an advantageous exploiter, competitively excluding their host from photosynthesizing over the long-term, through a process known as thigmotropism. Thigmotropism is the process by which plants respond to touch through bending and turning as they grow. Very interesting indeed!
The Strangler fig and other vines of the same genus are localized to tropical forests, ranging from Florida, US, to most everywhere in South America. There are probably relatives of the genus globally at approximately 23 Degrees North and South of the Equator (The locations of the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn).
Nature is so marvelous and sometimes mysterious isn't it?
