Humans like to compare. It is human nature.

I think this problem is something individuals should try to overcome. I personally enjoy it more when I see talented and capable people do well, even over me.

Comparing assumes people are similar to you in attitudes, interests, and temperament. This may true to an extent, but if you see it clearly you will be aware of how everyone is actually different. It may be that humans don't want to feel lonely and not part of a group that causes so much unnecessary pain and negative emotions like envy; so then comparing is used as a means to seek out social relations.
