RE: What Does the Turpin Family Tragedy Mean for Homeschooling Families?

in #news7 years ago

I’m a California home schooler. It’s not so bad. Maybe I’m just used to all the California regulations so it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but really, it’s not a difficult thing to set up.

Compared to other states though...

And it's about to get harder...

I agree. Being from California, you just kind of get used to filling out the forms - I guess I’m desensitized to it.

I totally get that. The other side to that is...at least here in WA...there are so many school administrators who try to push things as 'required' that aren't at all. A lot of parents here fall for it, too.

@scotters @metzli - I homeschooled in Texas. My kids never had a paper filled out about their education. I had no problem with this and appreciated the freedom. I believe (now) that this family was being used by the media. Whatever they did or didn't do, the "news" was using them to prove a point. California public schools are losing money because of the mandated 100% vaccination of all students, so some parents are pulling kids to homeschool them. The timing of this "situation" was perfect to get international attention and force more rules to come down from the top. The "facts" of this do not add up. Not at all.

I would not disagree with this at all...they are making a point that's unrelated. The issue is the abuse (assuming reports are correct) and has nothing to do with homeschooling.

This is also a big reason why, when our little one is older to choose a Make A Wish, that if she were to choose a Disney thing, we would want to go to FL instead...
