I have serious trouble imagining a text based game "working" in the sense of successfully simulating objects, but also as you say gaining wide traction. Still, it's an interesting thing to consider. =)

I suppose it depends on where we draw the line for "text based". My own original understanding was that it would have to be all text. But as it seems, a text based game can include a level of graphics as well.
