Sadly, our society views individuals who think for themselves and who are more true to themselves as freaks, deplorables, weirdos, etc. The individual who is more himself than someone desperately trying to fit in is made to feel second rate. Most people are too weak to attempt understanding their true identity--that is eliminating the labels where they fit in with everyone else. You are absolutely correct when you say, "Floating about beneath any assumed identity that suits your fancy is the path of the immature person."
