[PHOTO] Taking pictures through dirty train windows #20

Normally when I take pictures for my 'through dirty train windows' series I use a 35mm equivalent lens. It's a perfect lens for shooting pictures with a lot of information of the surroundings, plus I can capture both a subject outside of the train as well as borders of the windows of the train itself and/or reflections in the windows.

But after a day of shooting dansers in Bruxelles I still had my 90mm equivalent lens attached to my camera. I was tired from the day and was definitely not planning on shooting more pictures, at all. But of course, that's when you realize you're sitting in a train on that perfect 'sun is going to set soon' hour, with raindrops on the windows and sun fighting to shin it's light for the last time that day through the thick thick clouds.

Gorgeous.

I grab my camera to take pictures, and focus through the drops on the windows, on... Well, what? The sun, basically. There's no real focus point at all, only impressions of the sun, some clouds, and the lovely drops that transform to septagons through my lens.

In this case only manual focussing is a real option, and I try to find the borders of some of the 'opening' dark clouds in the sky. When I find them I push away a bit of the clarity of the drops that are more visible in the first shot I share in this post.

The photos were hidden in my Lightroom folder with the correct date and quick search term 'Bruxelles'. Of course, when I think back of that day, I think of the dansers. I totally forgot about these shots. In ten years of collecting folders in Lightroom with a date, a single word that has to serve as a quick reminder what's in it, how many little photo surprizes do you think are hiding?

So, dear fellow photographers, how do you keep up with your digital archives after years of shooting? It's starting to break my head and I'm planning on being a photographer for a multiple of these 10 years, so the problem will only grow bigger.

WOOOOOW this is sooooo artistic and creative. Love to see the world through your eyes.

<3 Thank you soooo much @gabyoraa! I always love to see your visits here :D

I like it :) did you shoot these in monochrome?

Thanks @kotturinn! No, I shot in colour and edited in Lightroom :-)

That's what I wanted to know, I would be interested to see the original, if you don't mind to post it in the comments, I think it looks even prettier in color haha

LOL! I didn't think it was prettier or I would have posted that one, but I'll check it out again tomorrow when I'm at 'the big computer' with all the photo archives again ;-)

Awesome haha. I don't know, it was like the first thing that came to mind when I saw this picture, I was like I wonder what the original looks like haha

Here is a quick JPG from the RAW file :D Lol, if I look at it again it's pretty nice as well actually :') What do you think?

To be honest with you, I like this better than b&w :) the bokeh is so pretty and the sky looks mysterious! I guess I just don't really like monochrome a lot, unless it's a portrait, maybe haha.

Really nice; getting even more abstract. And I like that!!

So, dear fellow photographers, how do you keep up with your digital archives after years of shooting?

My solution is using Lightroom. Works great; I have a total of about 28000 images and can find my way without getting nuts. Of course, the disadvantage is that one has to pay for it. But for me, it is worth the money.

I use Lightroom, that's where all the folders + 1 keyword per 'date' are. But further than that? Do you use tags when you load in your pictures for example? :D

Thanks for the compliments @bringolo!

Ok, that's interesting. Yes, I use tags when I import the images.
Basically, I use the folders, collections ànd tags to order my images.

I import the images into a folder based on date and shoot, e.g. "2018-05-07 Visit to Amsterdam". This gives me a basic structure and the combination of date and description is an easy start to find an image. And I add tags that are relevant for all of the pictures.

I use collections for my project, ideas, etc. E.g. I have a collection with all the images I published on Steemit; and another one with surveillance cameras.

After editing a picture, I add tags, a color label, and stars.

With these things, I can find back most of the pictures I want. It takes some time and building up a routine, but for me, this works. If you're interested I can get a bit more detailed.

Wh00p! This is already very interesting to read. I would love more details, but maybe you should/could create a post about it on Steemit? That way more photographers can learn from your smart archiving, and you can earn a few upvotes probably too!

It would be a daunting job to go all the way back through my archives, starting in 2005, but I might start bettering my habits from now on :-)

Thanks for your reply @bringolo!

That sounds like a good idea, although it might be a lot of work. There are a lot of tutorials on LR on the internet, but hardly any on how to organize your pictures. And the more pictures you have, the more it is important to organize them well!

So, I will considerate it, and see how I can work this out.

a very interesting picture seen, incredible shooting, it's good I like this picture, before i have never taken a picture like this and i will try it😊

Te quedaron muy buenas. Unas imágenes interesantes y originales. Felicitaciones. Un abrazo.

Muchas gracias @irvinc!

Love these photos! Simple stunning. great work! :)

wow. I'd love to see more photos in that style. It has something so mysterious but at the same so familiar. Bookmarked your website & followed here :)
cheers!

I wish my photos taken through dirty windows or windshields looked this good!

Lol! We can make them so! If you have made a few you could send them to me and see what I can 'uncover' from them through editing. Only if you are interested! :D

i love this! one of my fav things to do is working with dirty lens and abstract covers to make awesome shots like these...bravo!

Ahhh - awesome! Do you put those on Steemit?! Wait, I'll come look for myself ;-)

I absolutely love the resulting textures, they're so dreamy... kind of magical effect and perfect on those moody sepia monochrome shots

Thanks a lot @yidneth! I appreciate comments from fellow artists a lot <3 I think the dreamy nature of these pictures is what attracts me to making them. Too many 'pixel perfect' shots are made already, even phones create them crispy sharp ;-)

I thought I would check out your profile after you chatted me on discord and I'm so glad I did! I love you 'through dirty train windows' series. It's so original.

I keep my photos on the external drive in specific folders. I don't do photography for 10 years so it's not an issue now but I will have to see how I do it in the future.

For now I use the date and the specific name of the folder to be able to recognize it.

Ah, that's so cool! Glad you did and we found each other! :D Thanks for the compliments. I'm going to check out your profile in a bit :-)
