Shall we have a look at this Principle, this Timeless Truth,..'We are products of our decisions, not our environment.'
Perhaps we should start with an illustration....take a family with four children who are now grown....did they all take up the same profession?...do they all think the same?...how about share the same values?
Probably not...Why?....because they each have volition, the decision capability of each and every person...and people are different....thus their thoughts, motives, decisions and actions are different.
Who we are depends on what we are in terms of our thoughts, motives, decisions, and actions....all determined by our volition, our choices; not our environment.
This Principle is worth giving a think.

Well said @bleujay, once again you are the sober voice of reason, logic and common sense. I wish there were more people like you in the world I really do.
Sadly for so many it has now become too easy to blame their misery on society, for others it's just fashionable to do so. This messaging of course is reinforced by morally weak governments, the media and the education system as a whole.
Apparently we all need to change to make those unhappy with themselves feel happier, instead of those unhappy and disaffected souls finding the courage to look at themselves, acknowledge the problem is with them and then make the right decision to find a healthy solution. Only they have the power to make their life fulfilling.
Lovely beach photos @bleujay, very uplifting to look at indeed. In your last photo that hat really steals the show!

What a lovely, thoughtful, informed and kind comment with regard to the Timeless Truth...so true...it should be added as an addendum to my post...as it is what one would wish to post with regard to this subject. However to tread carefully in the post and discuss with vigour in the comments....is how usually goes...^__^
'Test the water' is Bleujay's mantra....as most Principles are controversial though they should be part of universal knowledge.

Decisions definitely shape our path in life.
Environment - boosts greatly starting positions and adds curves to the path, or straightens some parts of a way as well. One cannot be dichotomous here, both factors have their influence... and heredity, and upbringing (parents' example) too. And my child's example shows that sometimes it is impossible to influence a person at all, all efforts are useless and a person destroys his own future :/

And I do agree, we are a product of our decisions. There are people who became a good person or a successful person even though they were raised in a bad or poor neighborhood and that's because they made a right decisions in their life.

Our lives are certainly shaped by our individual decisions.
I also think, sometimes our environment influences the decisions we make as we are all born in different environments and are raised and exposed to very different things. We usually make decisions based on what we think we already know and how we understand the situation we are making specific decisions on.
....or that is my thoughts on it. 😊

Indeed we are influenced by our environment...sometimes in response and sometimes in reaction...I think the point of this Principle is that either way, we are responsible for the decisions we make.
It is true, we do appreciate making decisions from already known and familiar data...so perhaps this is a nudge to investigate further...to know what we choose.
