So recently our gang decided to go for a camping trip, to squeeze the max out of the brief Estonian summer. Now the only thing to do was to find a cool site, where we would want to spend a few days.
So we jumped in the car, as usual, hit the store for some snacks and headed towards the north-eastern part of Estonia.
Our goal for the day was not to go camping just yet, but simply drive around and spot some cool locations.
This part of Estonia is called Lääne County (Lääs meaning West) and is known for it's beautiful nature, lakes, beaches. Heck, i take that back. The whole Estonia is known for it's beautiful nature.
We reached the lake Tänavjärv exactly when the weather started slowly turning (Note - some sources put Tänavjärv in Lääne County, some in Harju County - not gonna dig into maps today).
Although the sky was getting darker, it was still warm and wearing flip-flops were in order. The lake though, with dark water reflecting the darkening skies, was a sign of a potential rainstorm approaching.
But the place looked awesome for a camping site. As an official camping site, created by RMK (Estonian State Forest Management Organization), this place has multiple separate picnic and camping areas, all within a reasonable distance from each other, so groups would not disturb the others.
All picnic areas come with proper picnic shelters, as you can see on the photos - sturdy benches with tables and roofs.
You can see the state takes care of it's residents and the forest - trashcans, fireplaces, grillstations - all are present. During the grilling seasons, firewood is also supplied by the state. Unfortunately, the start of the summer has been really dry and no firewood has been supplied, as there is a countrywide open fire ban in effect at the moment.
Hoping that the darkening skies would take care of that soon. The weather felt to be getting colder as well...
Want a more private picnic shelter? Just take a few more steps deeper into the forest and pick one, if being near the shores of the lake is not for you. Usually, estonians like privacy. And if you're camping, privacy might be the difference between a good night's sleep and waking every few minutes due to the neighbouring group.
This looked like a decent place to set up camp. The ground was a bit soft in some places, as the larger area is surrounded by swamps, but it provides awesome hiking trails in the beautiful surrounding forests as well.
Just make sure to remove those pinecones before you erect your tent.
The weather had turned even more colder as we left this place and travelled further.
Just a short trip north, we found another state managed camping and picnic site.
This site is right in the forests on the north coast, a few minutes walk will take you right to the beautiful sandy beaches.
The proximity of the beach and the turning of the weather unfortunately have made the degrees drop to 14 degrees Celsius. Flip-flops were quickly sent to the back of the car and hoodies came out. Our trip came to an abrupt ending but the verdict was "success". Area scouted and marked on our maps for next time.
We drove back home in pouring rain.
