This was my second attempt shooting macros.
I was a little disappointed after buying the Nikon 105mm macro lens since It wasn't what I was expecting. I thought the lens would magnify the subject, but quickly realize that wasn't the case. It turns out this lens only allows you to focus closer to the subject, unlike a non-macro lens.
Being the amateur I am, I was having a hard time chasing the bees around. Every time I try to get close, they fly away. 😟 (anyone has any suggestions?) It took a while, but at least got a few shots that day.
Notice the tiny spider on the left 😜
I didn't even know it was there until I was reviewing the photos at home.
Nice!! These guys look amazing. I might need to invest in a proper camera to take better pics like yours. Mine have all been snapped on my LG phone cam and I think I need to up my game!!
Your photos are amazing and insect on flowers are so facinating. ❤
I wouldn't spend too much on one unless you're planning to shoot professionally. I would buy an older model camera body but don't cheap out on the lens. The lens is more important for image quality.
WOW! stunning photos! i'm a photographer myself! following
Thank you for your support! :D
Very nice @lozt! You did great even with the winged advantage of your subject matter and their ability to zoom away when you get in there. I love these - I wouldn't be disappointed at all - the lens seems to be doing great!
Thanks @j-vo! I had seen other people's photos where they zoom in so close to the insect's eyes and they were so detailed. I don't think it's possible with the lens I have. :(
Yeah bees are pretty tough to capture!
Yeah, they are way too evasive. Maybe I should just stick to plants.. . at least they cannot fly away from me -- haha
Hi @lozt I would not be disappointed if I was you,
you clicked some great photos !
Lots of detail there so stick with it please :)
I am allergic to bees and wasps so it is an adventure every time I try to capture one on camera.
With my camera I can not get as close as yours so I have to move my face in haha
So what I do is I talk to them and tell the I will leave them alone if they will do the same for me :)
I think the talking part is the nervousness speaking :)
But I talk to flowers as well so maybe I am just a bit silly :)
Thanks for sharing your photos !
@openheart, thank you so much for your comment! I will surely keep trying, but I have a feeling I'll need new glass to get even closer.
Maybe you could bathe in insect repellent before making an attempt to photograph bees or would that be counter-productive since they might fly away before you take the shot -- haha!
I never tried talking to them, but I have a feeling that keeps them from flying away from me. 😅
Don't be so hard for yourself! You still did an amazing job, but I know what you mean... I'm trying to figure out what kind of camera I will buy in next few months and I'm scared about the same thing... that the sense will not get close enough with details... I was thinking to go with Canon and some 90 mm lens but everybody have so many different tips about good camera for macro photography that is hard to make final decision! Maybe you should consider to change lens?
The ONLY reason I went with Nikon over Canon was that I like the black and yellow. 😋 I wasn't feeling some of the Canon's gray color lens.
Nikon does have a better dynamic range - it picks up shadow details very well. It's great for landscapes. However, I had been told, if you want to shoot videos, Canon would be the way to go.
There also another thing to consider. Nikon sales have been dropping and they aren't doing very well. I'm a "little" worried they might be out of the picture a few years down the line. They are coming out with a new mirrorless camera that they claim would be a game changer, but we'll see.
Someone found they had a new patent on a "curved sensor", I can only assume it's for their new mirrorless they working on. They claim this will give sharpness all around, instead of just sharp in the middle and soft on the edges. This sounds amazing, but the problem is that it wouldn't work on the old lens. I spent a great deal of money investing in lenses, it would really suck having to start over again.
Another option you may want to look into is Sony or Fuji. I'm still on the fence with Sony, I think there still room for improvement. As for Fuji, I have been hearing good things about it, but for now, i'll stick with what I already have.
I like the fifth one most, I think you just have to be patient with the insects 🐝

...yes i have a suggestion....tho you dont need it...these pics are ...idk..out of this world.
But in case you are wondering how to get bug pictures easier I suggest "water-feeders". Most people look for bugs in pastures...which is fine...but they move to fast from one plant to another...BUT when they drink - they stay longer.
https://steemit.com/nature/@atopy/a-beezzzzzzz-life (sorry for spaming with links but on the last picture you can see what i mean).
Water feeders are simple to make...just some river rocks on a plate and some water. It takes a few days before the animals find it...but once they do they prefer it since they can move round the rocks and drink with ease.
Hahah thanks @atopy! It's not spamming if the information that comes with it is informative. :)
Thanks for the share!
