Last fall I went on an off-roading trip with some friends to Black Mountain KY and there is where I have seen the darkest sky and the most stars. A guy in the group had a nice camera and did a long exposure and got a really good shot of the milky way. So I guess my point is the top of a mountain is a good place for that?

If you haven't tried yet, long exposures of the stars is pretty cool
actually did try, but East coast is so light polluted that I'm having a hard time finding a good place for it, too broke to travel to midwest for it.

yeah, for sure, when I used to live in Chile, I had that sky of the milky way pretty much every night.
