In the middle of Egypt is the Western Desert of the Sahara, where on the east side of the main highway is the White Desert (I'll post pics soon!) and on the other side is the Black Desert. This is from my first trip through this region, and the black desert is always the first stop on most 4x4 journeys. It is much smaller than the other side, with only a few of these mountains of black rock.
The orange Saharan sand runs up and disappears as the black rock pushes through the earth, creating this odd formation. No camera tricks, the rock really is black! You can see more images on google
We get out of our rickety old Toyota 4x4 and are greeted by this:
Camera: Canon 40D
Lens: 10-22mm @ 22mm
Shutter Speed: 1/125 secconds
Aperture: f/4.5
ISO: 100
Here is a color version to give you an idea of how dark the rock actually is compared to the sand. This is why I felt B&W was better for this photo.
And a more menacing wide angle of it
Camera: Canon 40D
Lens: 10-22mm @10mm
Shutter Speed: 1/250 secconds
Aperture: f/4
ISO: 100
If you're ever in the western desert of Egypt, make sure your driver stops by the black section for a half hour before they take you over to the white, which has literally PURE WHITE chalk formations which are even more amazing. Stay tuned and I'll be posting them hopefully soon!

Nice use of black and white the first shot! The bright sky's contrast really makes it pop and the sense of scale is still there even with the longer focal length.
It's amazing posting wonderingly nice mountain placing looks
awesome , look so unusual
definitely it was a great choise to put use B&W. It and outstanding pic and the dark montain that arise from the sand looks awsome
I don't usually use B&W, so this is one of the rare times, but it definitely works way better than a color :)
Thanks a lot. Egypt is at the top of my to-do list, you just reconfirmed it. Gorgeous.
If you ever have any questions be sure to let me know! I've been through the desert on trips 2 different times, and all round cairo, and the length from aswan to luxor, so I've seen most of the country, totally worth it once it becomes safer :)
Deal @nords.
Dreamly place! Great shot.
Thank you!
This is a amazing place! very unique of its natural contours
Definitely! If I get back I will be stopping by there again, maybe get some better pictures :)
Oh wow! That sand is truly black! Never knew there was a black sand desert in Egypt, let alone a white one. Fascinating. And great shot! B&W definitely does it justice.
Next time I go back to Egypt I'll make sure to visit all those places. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, its only a small part of the desert where old volcano left some black rocks, then a couple kilometers away from that are 100% pure white chalk, the difference so close together is really cool, so if you ever are near cairo, there are many desert trips (2 day and more) that take you from cairo, to the desert, then back home, i HIGHLY recommend it, I have been on 2 of them, and will definitely go for a 3rd.
That sounds amazing! I really wanna go. I'll take note of it and make sure I check out those places next time I'm in Egypt :) thanks!
