A few days ago, when I was looking for a completely different butterfly, this one landed in front of me, all ready for its meal.
It was a painted lady (Vanessa cardui), known as cosmopolitan in the colonies, distelvlinder in Dutch, showing off its colours and patterns.
The ones we see in The Netherlands normally reside in Africa and around the Mediterranean, but they migrate north in spring. Very strong long-distance flyers, these, they don't just flap about a bit.
As it was busy eating, I was able to get some photos at my leasure:
I don't know if this one was going to stay, or continue north towards Scandinavia. If you live there, let me know if you see it flying past 8-).
Thanks for watching!
Very nice photo! Thanks for posting it
So amazing shots ! I like the color combination !!
Specta!
It never ceases to amaze me, that these paper-winged little beauties fly all over the planet the way they do. The buffeting winds must to be amazing n the trip. Yet they 'wander' on a known path for so many miles. Amazing indeed, and that they stay intact for most of the way. Though a bit tattered at times, as I've seen in your photos.
The tattering happens with old age, but if the rest looks OK, it is often from fighting over territory or dragonflies trying a bite and missing the meat.
Yes, the long-distance flying is an amazing thing, when you look at them flapping about here, seemingly without great flying skills, but I have seen a few flying fast and in a straight line, very impressive, with little glides along the way.
You can probably tell I like them.
