I Have No Idea What This Weird Creepy Crawly Thing Is

in #photography8 years ago (edited)

On a flower next to where I took the bold jumper glamor shots there was this odd looking thing.

Under the leaf was an ominous stalker.

Or was it guarding the Weird Thing? The box elder didn't seem to take any interest in eating it, but it sure seemed like it wanted to stay around it. And there were all these nymphs that looked like tiny eggs that sprouted legs.

I thought these were eggs on another nearby plant stalk.

But then I got closer.

And then I cropped the last image down to this at home in Lightroom.

Ahhhh!!!!! So many teeny weeny creepy crawly things! I felt like running away from my computer.

Can anyone identify what the Thing is in the first three pictures? 25% of SBD earned from this post is up for a bounty to the first person to identify it!

It's a Pupa of a Lady Beetle. It has different stages, it will get spots on its back within a day.

Looks about right! Wow I didn't think it would be a lady bug. I'm declaring you the winner of the bounty. Congratulations :)

Whoohooo :) Thanks a ton! Glad I can help.

Since I was paid in both liquid STEEM and SBD because of the SBD/STEEM marketcap ratio thing, I've sent you 25% of both.

Thanks Pfunk, you're the best. For anyone wondering, Pfunk is a person of their word and delivered on their promise.

Looks like an Asian Lady Bug Beetle pupa...

Damn... too slow on the research!

Thank you anyway! The image you found more closely matches the one I took than the image I found. It's extra confirmation, for that you'll get 10% of the SBD from this post and an upvote :)

Wow, thanks! Great work with the photos by the way. What sort of camera/lens do you use?

These were taken with a Tamron 90mm Di Macro lens attached to a D750.

Ah crap I forgot about the 10% I promised. Will rectify that immediately.

Sent 10% of the SBD plus roughly 10% of the liquid STEEM's worth in SBD because I don't have 3.5 liquid STEEM right now. :)

No problem! Very much appreciated, thank you very much!
:-)

I am very impressed with your photo-skills @pfunk
Could you release them as wallpapers?

Thanks fyrstikken. I'll give a full-res wallpaper to any of my witness approval constituents of course!

Those teeny tiny creatures are called Aphids and they are a gardeners worst nightmare. They literally suck the life out of plants. Ants harvest them to get at the sap the Aphids take from the plant.

Ladybirds are the solution. One ladybird will eat 50 of these per day.

Interesting fact: Aphids are born pregnant! WTF!

You think your life is miserable, just be glad you're not an aphid. Not only are they born pregnant, they're pregnant without benefit of sex. Not that sex with an aphid sounds like much of a treat. Two things are at work here: parthenogenesis and paedogenesis.

I'm no expert, but it looks like it could be some kind of "Giant Scale" insect. It looks a bit like the ones found on this page.

I think @veryrico got it but thank you for commenting! That thing looks like an old school trilobyte in certain ways.

Think these are some kind of bed bugs. They suck the plants sap to survive. Google for "aphid". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphid

Damn didn't see this :)

@pfunk Pennsylvania soldier beetle, Goldenrod soldier beetle or Pennsylvania leatherwing its pupa

The bigger bug is a box elder, but that's not the one I was curious about. Thank you for commenting though!

Very nice shots of the insects. Nice work!

Thanks! It's fun seeing some comments to old posts. I appreciate you took the time to look at my posts and commented :)
