The Old Man (An Original Poem)

in #poetry2 years ago (edited)

I wish to be the
old man in the room
with smiling eyes
that still glisten
with a kind of
quiet curiosity,
excited by, seemingly,
the most minute
of things,

I want to be
an old man who’s
not always avoided
life’s storms
but one who’s
weathered them
well enough
to remain whole,

The old man
who's kept both
his promises
and his virtue
in spite of
the temptations
of this tempestuous
world,

I hope I’m
an old man
who has tread lightly,
loved deeply,
and lived just
long enough
to see the
seeds he's planted
stretch out strongly
and freely towards
the sun,

If I am lucky,
these slippery
hours will,
soon enough,
reveal exactly
the kind of
old man I shall be.

You will be. You have to be. If not you and people like you, then who? :)

I hope I can pull it off. The world becomes more prickly with every day that goes by. : )

Beautiful poem mate. A line from me,

I hope I am an old man who has already got the most joy of life.

This is beautiful. You have begun to manifest this reality for yourself. Your wonderful words say it all. xxxx

Thank you! I really hope so. : )

I have no doubt you will be exactly the old man you wish to be- that we wish all old men would be :0)

Thank you, my friend! : )

I hope you realize that beautiful dream. It sounds easy, but perhaps only after a lifetime of regrettable actions does one come to be at this kind of peace with oneself.

Thank you! If life continues its trend, I suspect a lot of humbling things happen to you by your sixth decade. I see it either softens a person or turns them bitter/angry. I sure hope it's the former for me.

Well then, I have no doubt it will be.

I like your poetic sensibility @ericvancewalton
Your intention is very healthy for the light of the spirit.

It's a very good poem. Getting old is a natural thing. Anyone will grow old. Hopefully we can all become happy old people later until our journey in this world ends. Have a nice day, Eric..

As they say...getting older is much, much better than the alternative. : ) I hope you're having a wonderful week!

Time is exceptionally slippery, an old man with a twinkle in the eye when telling the story. You nailed this poem covering so many little things one hopes to accomplish when eventually sitting back to take stock.

Thank you Joan! I hope to build some great memories to reflect on during the next two decades of my life. In the meantime I'll be searching for ways to make time less slippery. : )

Remembrance Day greetings, when you find a way of making time less slippery let me know !LOLZ

hello dear friend good day
What a beautiful composition, words that invite reflection

"I hope to be an old man who has walked carefully, loved deeply, and lived long enough to see that
seeds he has planted reach the peak of his potential ¨

Excellent, as always, I appreciate that you share with us this beautiful poem

Have a happy start of the week

Thank you very much my friend! I really appreciate the kind words. Have an excellent week!

Great stuff. My hope as I get older is that I don't allow all of the stupid stuff in this world that we have been seeing lately make me bitter. I hope that I can not let it get to me and remain jovial in my older years in spite of all of it.

Thank you! I think about that a lot too. What a travesty it would be to walk through all these trials and tribulations of life only to be left an angry, bitter soul. I've seen it happen to people. So far the trials have only humbled me.

I get frustrated way too easily. I'd like to think I am pretty easy going, but I know I let things get to me more than I should.

It's actually what we ought to be and that's how and with that philosophy we should be aging.

The old man
who's kept both
his promises
and his virtue
in spite of
the temptations
of this tempestuous
world,

This one is timeless. Regardless of which age and which generation, we are in, virtue will have its testing time, and those who stand tall to uphold those values always sand taller in entirety even after death.

Thank you Eric for this heart-touching composition.

Thank you @milaan! I've been reading a lot of stoic philosophy lately and it stresses virtue above all else. I think that would be an excellent attribute to keep as we continue our journey here on Earth.

The world just lost a man that fits that description to a tee.

If you listen to this... you can hear the voice of such a man. :)

That is incredible! Thanks for sharing it.

Whoever retains the ability to see beauty does not age. I think it's about you :)

It totally is! : ) I've been thinking more about this as I've crossed the half-century mark. Twenty years go by in the blink of an eye. Soon I'll blink and be seventy.

Such a beautiful poem
Thanks for sharing it.

Thank you and thanks for reading it!

Beautifully written.
I admire your use of words in describing the kind of man you want to be when you're old.

This is really nice and I love every words said in it. An old man with peace of mind will balance it all. Thanks for sharing.

So glad you enjoyed it!

El poema es realmente hermoso hermano, que gran talento! increíble que aún se puedan crear poemas tan buenos

¡Gracias por las amables palabras! ¡Realmente lo aprecio!

The poem is really nice with so many meaningful words in it.

Many of us really need to return to learn from the old man

As always: beautiful, moving and thoughtful. There are so many people who fear old age that coming across this poem is almost a revelation to me. In this day and age, and especially in countries like mine, very few people live to be old: the average lifespan is 65 years. So getting to old age can be an achievement! When I imagine myself as an old woman, I imagine myself as a tree: that it has already given fruit, shade, that its roots will live forever and that its branches have reached the sky. A beautiful text to start the week, Eric. A hug and thank you

Thank you Nancy. Life expectancy isn't what it used to be here in the U.S. either, it's actually going down. I think it's possible to age gracefully though. I've watched many people around me achieve it. I think it's a combination of moderation/movement throughout life and staying engaged and genuinely interested in the world, that unquenchable curiosity, you know? A tree, what a beautiful analogy for aging! I hope you enjoy your week and thanks again for your comment.

What a lovely poem!! the words were exactly on point!

i would love to be that man too when i reach old

Thank you! I believe the road to becoming that old man is well within our reach. It is a dividend of investments made when we're younger.

I want to be
an old man who’s
not always avoided
life’s storms
but one who’s
weathered them
well enough
to remain whole

This part is often very hard in the life. Sometimes it feels that the life wants literally to break you. Sometimes I feel that the life wants to take away the things and/or the persons I love. Anytime I have happiness and love (in anyone or in anything), the life do everything to take these things from me. Nowadays I am literally risking my life to be with my Harris's hawk in a partially collapsed, not heated house, because no one allow me with my Harris's hawk in his/her house.

I'm very sorry to hear about your situation and hope you find adequate shelter before the worst of winter hits!

Much as I have heard old Ben Franklin was right up till the end...

Yes, he was an interesting one! He was always tinkering, learning, and never stopped living.
