Poetry - Swimming with the Dolphins

Overawed, we stare at stippled sky
where dolphins wheel, sing and fly.
The dipping waves frame hallowed drifts
of bubbles. Swift, sure and sleek -
chattering the pod seek out the sun,
in mottled patches of coral crowns
before spying us and plunging, down.

Quicksilver motion, as they careen by
in and through our roiling pod
of clumsy divers - rolling, inelegant.
A single smiling ocean jester lingers,
the rest shoot off into blue memory.
The jester dances in diffuse motion,
swallowing bubbles, nibbling fins.
A cavalcade of chaotic spinning grey
skin and twinkling eyes, until bored,
the wave of a powerful fin leaves
a back-draft of speed,
in a whirlpool of current
and settling specks of seaweed.

You have a magnificent way with words @raj808! Beautiful writing!

Thank you jaynie. I haven't written any poetry in about 2 weeks. When I saw the prompt for 'swimming with the dolphins' I knew that it was the subject to get me back on track - poetically ;-) anything to do with my scuba or freediving experiences and the words just flow. Thanks for checking out the poem, I'm glad you enjoyed it :-)

My pleasure!

great photo!

Thanks dimitar9

Such a vivid and evocative poetry @raj808! Your rich vocabulary is also a source of inspiration and an opportunity for learning. Your poetry made me think of certain Jean Giraud/Moebius illustrations.

Thanks @f3nix. I checked out Jean Giraud's Moebius illustrations and I can see where you're coming from :-) This poem was written from a real-life experience which is why the descriptive elements are quite expressive and the sense of movement is strong. I can still remember the experience of the dolphin playing with us on our dive like it was yesterday. Moments like that are what I live for :-)

Yes I come - also - from there, spotted 🙂 I know you're a scuba diver, it's like me with snowboard in a way.. our experiences make our words alive. I have to visit your discord one of these days..

You went to your place of peace- the ocean :)

Indeed. I needed to remember that day's diving as I was in stress-mode the other day. I was made up when I saw the prompt among the others and I knew I could escape into aqua-themed memories, drift in the seas of poetry lol Thanks for your endless supply of inspiring prompts mariannewest :-)

Thank you for taking me up on them :)

This delightful poem captures the playful nature and beauty of the dolphin. One of my favorite sea mammals. Well done!

Thanks wandrnrose7 it felt very natural and flowing when I was writing it. I think it's the only poem I've ever written from a freewrite prompt that had no editing at all. Nothing done to the text that is lol

Congratulations! Funny how the mind is freed up when we have to just write. ;)

I actually needed to use dictionary to understand some of the words here. Wide span of vocabulary, as wide as the ocean. Thank you for sharing this, I could never like poem like this. This is so in depths. :)

Thanks @iamjadeline, I'm glad you enjoyed the poem :-) I'm sure you could write a good poem like this, it's just a case of picking the subject that is your passion. I am a passionate scuba diver so writing about the sea and sea creatures comes natural. This poem was written from a real-life experience which is why the descriptive elements are quite expressive.

Wow! This is so amazing. I love the way you manipulate words to project strong meaning.

Cheers @udochi, I try.

Beautiful!!!

Thanks @byn :-)

Thank you for this lovely poem full of the absolute wonder and joy to be seen in the dance of the dolphins! It makes me long to be able to see such a sight in person at least once in my life.

Look what's dropped in!

Thanks @brisby. We got really lucky on that dive as we had seen the pod pass over on the dive earlier that day and they just sailed on by above our heads. I think that on the second dive the dolphins had already hunted and were in the mood for after-dinner play. Hence we got lucky with the young fella who stayed with us for about 5-6 mins. The rest of the pod just circled us for like 30 seconds before getting bored and disappearing. We could hear their clicks and whistles but couldn't see them. It was a truly amazing experience. :-)

bought to mind the spleens (spelling?) of the dudes that live more than half in the sea....

That is an awesome link Jay. I shall watch that program tomorrow with my breakfast. I wish I could live out at sea doing something amazing like that. Scuba diving for fun and helping save the oceans as a job. I missed my calling maybe :-(

Interesting flow in this poetry, you captured the marine live very brilliantly :-)

Thanks @abmakko. This poem was written from a real-life experience which is why the descriptive elements are quite expressive and the flow is fast. I can still remember the experience of the dolphin playing with us on our dive like it was yesterday. Moments like that are what I live for :-)
