Oct 5, 2014. This week marks the 50th anniversary of the Free Speech Movement at the University of California, Berkeley.
That movement launched the massive sit-ins and protests that would help define a generation of student activism across the country. 50 years ago, before the Free Speech Movement, UC students were barred from distributing flyers about the major issues of the day. In 1964, it was the civil rights struggle."It was the passion that fueled the Free Speech Movement," says Lynn Hollander Savio, who was a senior at Berkeley in October of 1964.
This year, the university is hosting a series of events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the FREE SPEECH MOVEMENT. There's no doubt that many students today appreciate the activism that came before them.

The No Free Speech Movement at Berkeley
The cancellation Wednesday of a speech by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos at UC Berkeley was, according to a university spokesman, “not a proud night for this campus, the home of the free speech movement.” That’s putting it mildly. Even if the cancellation was justified by concerns about public safety after an outbreak of violence and property destruction, the fact that Yiannopoulos was prevented from speaking to a willing audience of campus Republicans should make supporters of free speech shiver.
The university insists that it made elaborate preparations for protests. It canceled the speech only after what it called an “unprecedented” invasion of the campus by “more than 100 armed individuals clad all in black” who engaged in violent, destructive behavior. They hurled metal barricades, threw Molotov cocktails and smashed windows at the student union. Yiannopoulos wrote on Facebook: “One thing we do know for sure: the Left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down.”
So UC Berkeley bends the knee to a violent Antifa group from the left, that are clad in black, hooded, hidden, throwing Molotov cocktails (bombs), and intimidating the officials of the university.
The site that was the beginning of the FREE SPEECH MOVEMENT, caves into to violent Antifa left extremists, and is not ground zero for THE END OF FREE SPEECH.
Please upvote if you believe this was NOT a proud day for UC Berkeley. And left wing Antifa extremism needs to be stopped.
STEEM On!!

Above: Biology Professor Bret Weinstein explains how he was "run off campus" by a mob of angry, stupid, History-illiterate Marxist students because he refused to vacate campus when "social justice warrior" students reversed "a day without black people" into a demand that all whites leave the campus for "a day without white people." He was accused (by a hysterical mob of uninvited SJW students who were not students of his class) of being "racist" because he sent a politely-worded email out that disagreed with their protest concept, and for attempting to teach his biology class as normal. This press conference is with him now teaching his biology students at a location off campus, due to death threats.
The book that explains, in great detail how colleges gradually lost freedom of speech, resulting in the current situation is "The Shadow University" by Harvey Silverglate. He talks about how Marcuseanism (a "post-modernist" variant of Marxist collectivism) was legitimized throughout the 1960s and 1970s by "soft-sciences" Academia, and how new posts (often called the "Office of Student Affairs") at Universities gradually expanded their own power, eventually commandeering campus police power. The prior sorry state of affairs then resulted in the current situation at Evergreen University, Berkeley, and campuses nationwide, a literal "Shadow University."
Whereas this power was once seen as "American" and owing their highest-level allegiance to the Bill of Rights, the campus police powers, like all Americans, are now so dumbed-down by inadequate government education, that they view their allegiance as being to whatever petty Marxist occupies the "office of student affairs." As a longtime libertarian ballot access petitioner, I can attest that these "campus police" are often totalitarian thugs, very willing to silence free speech, and threaten and arrest speakers, and having zero knowledge of, or caring for, the rule of the common law, or the Bill of Rights.

What happen to the Land of the free ? This seems like we are going back to the times where nothing was ever fair anymore for the people
Agreed. Your point of view needs to be able to withstand discussion and debate. If your only path to enforcing your view is through violence, the view is probably valid
Great post @davebrewer

Ironic as it is probably the worst place in the US for free speech now (considering the number of events which have be disturbed or completely shut down due to violence by Antifa this year).
I wonder how many snowflakes on campus understand the irony?
Ahh...The 70's. The age of sex, drugs and rock n roll, and... Protesting! Do u have any idea what their motivation was for attacking them? (other than ignorance)
The Antifa attackers dont like free market and capitalism. They are communists and Marxists. They want to shut down the voices in favor of free market using violence.
Antifa is not ignorant. They are much more dangerous than that. They have a point of view and a desired outcome - the desired outcome is turn USA into Cuba or Venezuela.
Don't get how the Free Speech Movement applies to that. They don't specificly advocate those things do they?
Freedom of speech is basic need for republic and 50th aniversary mark of that freedom
I agree with you @davebrewer, there have been a lot of darkness and confusion lately, people are increasingly entering confrontation and conflicts are taking place everywhere. But we all need to remember that we are free people who have the right to their opinion and identity. Although some people do not let this live peacefully, after that, provocations and attacks were organized.
It is not only here that it happens. The left wing supporters do it all over the world. Free speach is only for those who vent out the left wing voice. All the rest are racists - biggots - islamophobes - ... . I don't agree with all Milo and others like him say. But to be frank the left is proving there points.
You've got the main point. It doesnt matter if you like or dislike the views that Milo wants to share. He needs to be free to provide his views.
The freedom to speak your opinion, doesn't mean you are exempt from being thought an idiot, if your opinions are idiotic.
Totaly agree with it. I have been a listeneren to Ayaan hirsi ali, Milo, and there pears. I don't agree with all but they do not fear the topics most walk away from. They speak there mind and everyone is free to go into discusion with them. And you are free to speak to them and vent your opinion. But latly the left is prohibiting them to speak left and right and in the same sentance they are saying free speach for all. Hypocrits!

I agree. This movement/indoctrination goes back many years. It was meticulous planned and Univ staffed accordingly. This is by design. I think we also need to look at the k-12 "transgender education" being done as well. All is a smoke screen....and from the "dark side".
