I'm a big fan of the Headspace app. I'm using it on a regular basis. One key message I've pickup up there is that trying to "out think" yourself is not going to work. It's not going to be effective to try to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. What is effective, the app claims, is to distance yourself from the thoughts, and simply observe them. Once you're able to do this, you can easily let negative thoughts go.
