Hey Everyone, I am excited to present to you the Prepper Cook-Off Challenge. Test your cooking skills by trying to prepare the most palatable meal from two random long-term storable food items.
ย
Many of us in the Homesteading Community have prepping tendencies so I decided to come up with a challenge that plays off of those habits, and requires both luck and skill. This challenge will be a fun test of your ability to utilize storable items in a SHTF scenario. If you aren't into prepping, that is OK you might still find this entertaining.
The Prepper Cook-Off Challenge was partly inspired by @lorgnigel's Interactive Battle Tournament which is a fun Steemit based RPG that, I feel, is great for community involvement. One element of the game is random dice rolls which I decided to incorporate into this challenge also. Registration is still open for IBT#5 as of writing this post, if you are interested.
The Prizes
For Round 1 of the Prepper Cook-Off Challenge I will be giving Away 20 SBI (Steem Basic Income) shares: 10 to first place, 7 to Second place and 3 to third. I will also give a 100% upvote to all valid entries.
What is @steembasicincome? It is a program where you sponsor people by buying them shares. Both the sponsor and the sponsored get a share which provides continued upvotes to member content.
Learn more about Steem Basic Income.
I will be doing a follow up post to announce the winners and ask for feedback on how to make the Prepper Cook-Off Challenge better. If you would like to see prizes other than SBI, proposing it at that time would be a good idea.
The Scenario
In the near future, a massive EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) from the sun has knocked out the electrical grid and the world has devolved into chaos. Being a Steemian, you and your group are more prepared than most but after many months hunkering down you are nearly out of food and are forced to scavenge the nearby buildings for supplies.
You are facing a dire scene with almost every building already ransacked and picked clean of food. You persist in your search and are eventually rewarded. Going through the cupboards of one kitchen you find 2 items that fell behind a lazy Suzan and were missed by previous scavengers. Not much, but you also have 1 item and some spices left at your secret lair. You must now combine these items into a meal that won't cause you and your fellow survivors to gag or die of heartburn.
How to Enter
Updated, added rules 7 and 8.
1. In the comments section declare that you are entering and summon the random dice generator by mentioning @rolltwodice in the your comment. Match the dice roll to the list below to see which items you found.
ย
I have tried to keep this challenge as inclusive as possible and realize that some participants may have dietary restrictions. If you do, I will provide a suitable substitute but you have to declare the restriction before you roll. If, for example, you are vegan and roll a 4 on Dice#2 you would get a can of coconut milk instead of evaporated milk.
Dice 1
- Can of beans in tomato sauce
- Can of diced tomatoes
- Dry rice (1 cup)
- Dry macaroni noodles (1 cup)
- Can of fruit cocktail
- Dried apricots (1 cup)
Dice 2
- Can of mushrooms
- Can of kernel corn
- 1 cup flour (or gluten free alternative)
- Can of evaporated milk (or Coconut milk)
- Rolled oats
- Peanuts (1 cup)
2. After thinking about what you want to try making with the items you rolled choose your 3rd item (the one you had at your lair) by declaring it in a reply to your first comment. This item can basically be anything that can be stored without freezing or refrigeration for 6 months or longer. Quantities are to be 1 can or 1 cup if the item is a dry good. Hopefully this will allow you to make the first two items complimentary.
3. Create a post where you describe what and how you would cook your meal. It could be one dish or two or more. It is up to you as long as you stick to your ingredients.
ย
If you actually make your meal and take pictures. You will have a much better chance of winning. If you choose to only describe the meal and cooking steps I still expect a decent post. I reserve the right to refuse entry of low effort posts.
Cooking oils, sugar, salt and spices are permitted but they must be used in a reasonable amount. You can't use so much that they become a main item.
** Updated for better clarification. **
- Herbs are fine as long as they are dried. No fresh ingredients. They have to be storable.
- Stock cube is fine.
- Wine, hard liquor and vinegar is fine but keep the combined liquid condiments to a shot glass worth. The idea is that they don't contribute much to the meal other then some flavor. Once again they need to be shelf stable.
- If it isn't obvious water can be used in any quantity.
4. One of your tags needs to be #preppercookoff so I can find all the entries.
5. Mention and link to this post in your entry post.
6. You have until May 3 at 11:59pm MST (UTC -7) to submit your entry.
7. If for some reason you really don't want the items you rolled you cannot re-roll but you can trade them if you can find someone to trade with. You must trade both items, you cannot trade one or the other that would make the challenge too easy!
ย
Remember that you are allowed to select a third storable item of your choosing and use spices. You may be able to get creative and make poor item combinations work.
8. If for some reason you cannot acquire the types of ingredients on this list let me know before you roll and I will work with you to come up with alternatives. Then you can roll and participate in the challenge.
The Judging
I will be picking the 3 winners for this Prepper Cook-Off Challenge. I thought of maybe having people upvote entries but it seemed too easy to abuse and unfair to newer Steemians that aren't well known yet.
I will be judging based on a number of factors as follows:
- Overall quality of post.
- Whether the meal is described or actually made.
- Was the meal eaten (photos required ๐๐คข).
- Difficulty of items rolled.
- Creativity of the food and how it is prepared.
- Overall effort level.
- Presentation of the meal.
As you can see, the judging criteria is highly slanted in favor of those who actually make an effort to cook the meal!
Conclusion
Hopefully, that all makes sense. If not, I will be participating for fun so you can always watch and see what I or others do. I am hoping to see a lot of friendly competition and interaction. I am sure there will be some interesting ingredient combinations. Time to get cooking everyone!
Ok were in but its not fair for everyone else because we are seasoned preppers. @rolltwodice
On my third ingredient is Sweet-n-spicy Beef Jerky. The Mrs is going to roll as well and we will make both dishes. It will be some good practice for us. Do we have to use our prep cooking tools as well? Cook it down by the pond?
We had a Bobcat snag a chicken Wednesday, those critters are fast.
I am not sure where I can find a can of organic mushrooms we have plenty of organic 100% grassfed beef and organic macaroni stored now. We never eat mushrooms so it is the part we wont want to eat.
Well played on the ingredients Sir! I can't wait to see the finished product.
If you cook it using your prepping gear or in some other creative manner you will get a higher score.
The organic mushrooms in a can might be hard to find but I am sure I have seen them. They will probably be pricey though.
All certified organic food is frigging pricey! Its some crazy stuff that a farmer who uses no pesticides or conventional methods has higher cost than a farmer who has to buy his seed from a multinational company and buy herbicides and pesticides?
It has to change over time, after more farmers get it. When we first converted to 100 % organic diet our grocery bill tripled.
We have been growing everything and raising our chickens beyond organic and I don't see the big difference in labor. But the cost of natural pesticides and feed for the animals is astronomical. When we sell a dozen eggs for 6 dollars we only cover the cost of feed.
The biggest win factor is we almost never get sick. The last time we all got sick is when we bought a bunch of conventional food in trying to prep our bodies to live in a 3rd world country for 6 weeks. We all got sick with in two days and it was not fun. We decided right then we had to be careful what we eat overseas and try to stay away from heavy pesticide laden GMO food like substances. No corn, wheat, rice, strawberries or soy products that are not certified organic. I am sure the list will be bigger on that but we are trying to figure out how to live overseas where there might not be an organic program.
I don't think I have noticed something as obvious as that. But usually if I get sick and think about it I was eating a bunch of crap for a few days before. There is definitely some sort of link there.

Ok @rolltwodice, smile and give me something nice.
Oh my, looks like mushroom is the norm here lol.
3rd item from stash is a can of condensed milk...
Wait, isn't a 5 and a 6 fruit cocktail and peanuts?
it is! I was afraid the dice will give me mushroom since I've seen you and hubby get it. glad I got dessert ingredients!
we have to get this right...planning for d day...
It's nice that between you and your husband you managed to get dinner and dessert. But will the kids eat it? Haha..
And you are right there has been a lot of mushrooms rolled.
BTW we are going to buy the smallest can of mushrooms that is sold!
The kids only prefer Envirokidz Choco Chimp, Koala Crisp and Honey Nut Cluster flakes most other food is undesirable. Not really..... joking aside I am pleasantly happy with the diet my children will eat.
We will see if they will eat the SHTF food. I don't think they will.
The preferred drink is anything sweet.
I have to say if you can keep from it don't give your twins sweets they will prefer them over anything else.
That is good advice. We already have considered that and have only been feeding them whole foods. They seem to like meat and believe it or not plain yogurt. The sweetest thing they get is grapes cut into small chunks.
They are 9 months old. It is driving the grand parents nuts that they can't feed them sweets.

Can I just double check the deadline - it's May 3rd, so effectively a two week turnaround from this post?
Also, it's just spices, sugar, salt, cooking oils in our 'store cupboard'.... can I assume that 'spices' means anything on my spice shelf, so effectively 'herbs' too, and maybe a stock-cube?
Can I count white-wine count as a spice?
Sorry to ask, my store cupboards quite bourgeois.
No that is cool I should have clarified better.
If you want to use more wine then above during the cooking process you will have to drink it!
Yes the deadline is May 3 at 11:59pm (UTC -7)
Updating rules above.
It's quite a bourgeois condiment cupboard then!
I have updated the rules to make it easier for more people to participate. See rules 7 and 8.
Excellent competition full of imagination!
Fruits and corn for me,
a good survivalist dish !!! haha
Sounds like a great combination! LoL
Don't forget you get to add a third storable item of your choice as well as cooking oils and spices. Also you don't have to make just one dish you could make two or more seperate dishes.
ok, I choose what I want, as a tin can or feculents?
I have no idea what "feculents" are but as long as it can be stored without refrigeration or freezing then yes.
I REALLY want to see this feculent dish. Whatever it is.
Starches, at home in France, are rice, wheat, corn, barley,
all that is rich in starch.
CONGRATULATIONS!
You post is featured in the Preppers' Curation Day- Weekly Edition 8!
Thanks, I will check it out. :)

Fixins for a hearty meal... will think about it. Thanks for the inspiration and the non edible roll :)
That is actually the best roll I have seen so far!
The pressure is enormous haha
This is an amazing idea! I don't know if I am brave enough to try :-P
The worst that can happen is you have to choke down some disgusting food. Haha. But just think of the entertainment value! ๐
Urgent! I was just introduced to this post and need a roll! I realize the deadline is days away, but I accept the challenge!! @rolltwodice
I cant wait to see what people come up with ... this challenge is a great idea @canadianrenegade ! Keep em coming!
Edit- I do not believe I will be able to find Dried apricots (1 cup) Please void this from my roll.

HAHA I knew it... I thought I was going to get the macaroni noodles and peanuts! Close enough...
Third item will be canned tuna.
Well be rice back to teach you peanuts how to cook! Tuna in once we get the grid back up! These EMPs are rough!
Haha, looking forward to your entry. ๐
Wait no longer :D Check out my Something Random Sunday post for my entry!
Entry accepted. Thank You!
Finally I made it.. Here's an entry for share.. good day and God bless. Hope this is okay and hope you'll appreciate this. Thanks.
https://steemit.com/preppercookoff/@roselyn028/my-very-own-rice-and-peanuts-is-equal-to-rise-crispies-for-preppercookoff
My recipe is simple)) Put aside only rice. Open the rest and pour it into the bucket. Go to the forest, dig a deep hole, pour it all into it. Cover the pit with branches. The next day from the pit we take out the wild boar and fry the steaks)) ....... forgot ......... the rice will approach the steaks as a garnish))
Haha. That is very clever and I bet delicious.
This method is less dangerous to health than trying to cook something from those cans))
That all started to sound a bit like the start of 'the road'at the beginning. Thankfully the rules exclude human flesh for most of us (which technically can be stored for years... and i'll never forget that cellar scene!).
I'll have a crack at this... @rolltwodice
What was that I said about bots?

Dried apricots and a can of mushrooms.
Im glad you get points for difficulty - do I have to declare my third ingredient now or can I leave thay as a surprise in my post?
You should set the tasks for Masterchef. It'd nake it more interesting to say the least.
Great competition btw. Vwell thought through.
You should declare it here but you can wait to declare it until just before you post your entry. You have until May 3.
I found The Road to be extremely depressing. One of those movies that is worth watching but you never really want to see it again.
It was that cellar scene that did it for me.
NB - I have been reliably informed by someone with impeccable taste in novels that the book version is one of the best he's ever read - apparently the film misses a lot of the father-son relationship stuff which is more about what the book focuses on!
Thanks, I have never watched Master Chef if that is what you are referring to. What are the tasks?
It must be a British (and Australian) thing... there are lots, but there's one called 'the invention test' where they get given a certain, limited number of ingredients, which typically mix really well, and have to make something.
Random dice rolls would definitely spice that up, excuse the pun.
I feel for you on those ingredients you rolled. ๐
Not at all... there are marks for difficulty of ingredients. I welcome it!
That's the spirit! I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
This is the first contest I'm participating in, too irresistible and I can't wait to see the fine concoctions that people come up with. Thanks for doing this! Blows on dice... @rolltwodice

Beans in tomao sauce and rolled oats? Could be worse, I suppose. Thinking on this a couple days.
Sounds good I am honored that you chose my challenge as your first to enter.
Keep in mind that you can make more then one dish. So if you think of a third item that is complimentary to the beans and the oats then you should be good. That is what I decided to do with my fruit cocktail and mushrooms.
I just reread the instructions and didn't see anything about a second dish. I am still thinking on the third ingredient to go with the two I rolled.
I didn't say you could but I also didn't say you couldn't, I think I just said "meal". I should probably clarify that so there is no confusion.
Ok. Well, I'll leave that option open if I get stuck! :)

Wow I got lucky with the rolls! I had both items already in my pantry. I'm not going to lie, I was not going to drive to town for groceries for this contest so I was prepared to do some creative substitutions.
Here's my entry.. I had fun with this one! Thanks @canadianrenegade!

Well then, apricots and peanuts it is. Thanks for the reminder btw way! Third ingredient Iโm going with rolled oats. Question... seasoning items... could a tsp of honey be an acceptable seasoning add in?
Yeah that is fine.
That is a good choice! I bet it was tasty. :)
Can't wait to see what you come up with!
I choose risotto rice to go with my two items btw. Will post tomo!
Sounds good!
Oh it is. It's already written, but I just can't face another 30 minutes of this clunky interface this evening! I couldn't even get on yesterday! But for some reason busy worked fine.

Aha I initially thought that was super hard, but if we were in a zombie apocalypse and that's what we were landed with, I think I could do okay... mind you, not sure I can pull it off in a few hours....
I thought it was challenging also. Hopefully you can come up with something.
Hey my entry:
https://steemit.com/food/@revisesociology/beating-the-apocalypse-blues-with-vegan-mushroom-and-apricot-risotto
Cheers!
Thanks for the entry! I will check it out as soon as I can.
Hopefully you're inundated with responses! Unfortunately I'm a bit low on VP to go around and upvote some of the entries myself!
Tell you what, assuming you put links to all the entries, I'll randomly give 1 SBI to one of them, exluding the winners, based on a roll two dice roll. If there's really shed loads of entries, I'll work out some kind of formula to make it fairer.
I've got a few steem sitting around that I want to (sort of) gift to SBI anyway!
So far there hasn't been a ton of entries. 6 I think although there is still time for more. I am however impressed with the quality of the entries. I would welcome any additional rewards to add to the pot.
I have a post pre-written for tonight and the winners will be announced in a post tomorrow. I'll be sure to mention your bonus contribution.
I'm surprised there was only 6 - it's a great competition, I would've expected double that at least.
Unfortunately now I've just triangulated (combined with lack of engagement with my recent SBI post) how few people are actually interested in engaging on this, at least ATM. I'm sure it'll grow.
I'm still on it however!
I'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out. I think some people looked at the quality of the first few entries and got discouraged. Some of these recipes I actually want to try.
The only thing I think I am disappointed in is I don't see any gag worthy enteries or recipes that went horribly wrong. I was hoping that would be half the fun!
Im not sure why nobody jumped at the opportunity to grab a few easy SBI on your post.
Hi there @canadianrenegade I find your challenge fun, interesting and exciting.. (if ever I can't aford on my first dice can I make it roll the second time around??) Gotta try_ goodluck to me "im not really good at cooking but in eating I must say im not into diet". Go @rolltwodice

Omg! Can I roll the second time around??if its ok?
I'll trade my rice & peanuts for your beans in tomatoes & mushrooms
Okay.. lets do it! Thank you.. I can think of what will I be cooking but I guess its much better.. Thanks much (hopefully what we're doing and agreeing is fine)
@roselyn028. It crossed my mind that people in some parts of the world might have issues with some of the ingredients. Would you be willing to trade your ingredients with @girthbomb? I think I am going to amend the rules so that ingredients can be traded but you have to trade both rolled ingredients not just one or the other or it will be too easy.
In the future you can also declare before rolling that you might have a financial issue or problems finding certain ingredients locally and I will find substitutions.
Thank you for the amendment.. soon I'll serve what I can do with peanut and rice traded with @girthbomb.
@canadianrenegade I'll be adding marshmallows for my third ingredients. Hope this one is fine i already have something in my mind to do with rice and peanuts and I'll be serving it one of this days God bless

ha ha ha .. interesting game, but I am confused with cooking matters, anyway I think, if I try maybe will menghaslkan a very different cuisine for our culture respectively ,,
your idea is very brilliant @canadianrenegade
but if I may ask for material directly from you, and I will try to make it, but not to join the race,
for example you give me
1, coconut milk
2, raw meat
we'll see what kind of food can be made from the material you provide, and of course what I make does not go into the ratings assessment ,,
Are you able to list 12 dried or canned foods common in your area? If so I will order them and then you can roll and participate.
1.flour, sugar, salt
2, eggs., Chicken meat, mustard, colt
3.mentega, oil, salt
4, tuna, cilantro, turmeric, pepper, onion and garlic
5, beef, tomato, grouper
6, wotel, shrimp paste, cucumber, long bean
7.cabe,
I am confused to mention what else, okay then I asked my wife and post how to make rendang and the material ,, ha ha ha ,, really interesting
Hmm, I think the language barrier is getting in the way.
The items have to be packaged food like in a can, jar or dried. They can not be fresh.
for packaged food I do not know, because we always eat fresh and process it yourself,
ok, i will try to find out to my friends ,,
Thank you for your time

OMG, I think I just rolled the worst possible ingredient combination! Fruit cocktail and canned mushrooms....
I'm gonna sleep on it and figure out that third ingredient tomorrow.
Emoji Source
For my third item, that was at my secret SHTF lair I am going to use a can of coconut milk. I have a plan!
Oh boy is it going to be a tasty treat? Before I rolled I thought to myself "Please no mushrooms"
I'm actually going to make two small dishes out of those ingredients!
Well we are out of luck our local organic grocery store had 0 fruit cocktail and 0 canned mushrooms Plenty of fresh mushrooms and fruit though? What should we do?
Is there any canned fruit?
Is non-organic out of the question?
I know Iโm breaking the rules, but I would search until I find beans in tomato sauce and corn so I can make a nice chili ๐ถ
You can always roll and see if you get lucky! ๐

I think so too!

Hi @canadianrenegade!
Thanks for using the Dicebot... I'll definitely have to give it a proper profile image now. If you ever need a variation set up (just like our little friend Gobbo for IBT) please let me know.
Thanks for making the dice bot. Didn't know who made it, now I do!
You're very welcome. I'll get to making some art for it this weekend so it has a face.
Great Idea, I will take the challenge. Give me something good @rolltwodice
Hi there @girthbomb thanks for your offer. Lets go and serve what we've got to @canadianrenegade's challenge. Now you've got beans in tomato and mushroom for cooking. God bless
Thank you @canadianrenegade for the rule adjustment for trading. My trade with @roselyn028 is pleasing to my palette.
Since I think beans in tomato & mushrooms would make a great meal all by themselves I am going to challenge myself to have to forage my 3rd item from the natural environment in around the city in Utah, USA in which I live.
Please stick to the rules of using a long term storable food. I can potentially amend the rules for the next challenge to allow foraging.
I allowed the trades to help people that might not have access to or money to buy some of the ingredients participate more easily.
@canadianrenegade I will respect your decision and will use a long term storable food.
Thanks :)
