Introducing myself, my clarinet, and some old friends

Hi, my name's Danielle Murray. I'm planning to post here about music-making and various tech stuff, as well as sometimes entering competitions or posting videos. I'm also the owner of the Radio Liquorice account, and will be doing my first introductory post there soon. I heard about Hive and PeakD through @steevc, a long-time musical collaborator of mine. We have played quite a bit as a duo, @swing47 , me on clarinet and him on guitar, and are both members of a bigger band, Swing 42, which doesn't have a presence here (yet? who knows?). While he has his own separate trajectory as a singer-songwriter and Bowie interpreter, when we play together it's mostly pre-war jazz, either busking in nearby towns, at local events or for a group of lindyhop/swing dancers from the local area. Another Hivean (can you even say that?) who features on Radio Liquorice's first podcast episode of 2022 (soon to be posted here too) is @todayslight, so listen out for his original tunes there!

You can hear a bit more about the group we play with and our own musical histories, both with the Arlesey Jammers and going back way before that, on Steve's podcast recorded with me late last year.

I recently also recorded some demos with my jazz teacher, Marco Marconi. I used Zoom H4n and H2n digital recorders stuck behind us in his music room and edited them on Audacity, so they're not properly mastered or anything. Maybe I'll graduate to a proper recording studio one day:

Looking forward to some musical interactions on Hive!

Hello and welcome @daniellemurray

Loved the podcast, fantastic.

Keep it real, babe.

Welcome to Hive, I have seen you and steevc in few post just out playing here and there and having fun entertaining people. I listened, (well jumped through the podcast), and I did like that you kept the volume consistent through out. During times you were talking and the times music was playing I did not have to keep chasing the volume control, that is so annoying a thing to do.

One thing maybe to think about is when you make your podcast post on Hive, is to single out the original artist and the time stamp they would be in the podcast. I have gotten to where I like hearing peoples original works.

I hope the Hive Music scene continues to grow, there is so much talent out there world wide, and so much music that never makes it's way to the American Shores which is a shame, I really loved that reggae song toward the end of the podcast.

I just need more time in the day, at least with music I can listen and work at the same time, though it is still distracting.

Again: Welcome to Hive.

Hi, and thanks. I like your suggestion about the timestamps. It's great that you like original tunes - so many people prefer to hear covers!

Hey there @daniellemurray - a huge warm welcome to hive! Always great to welcome another musician!

Another Hivean (can you even say that?)

I think that works for me and have seen it before. I sometimes use Hiver but I've only been here less than 5 months myself and anyway I think language evolves - especially in something as fast moving as crypto!

How did you come to pick the clarinet?

Hi thanks @tdctunes; it's good to be here :) Hivean I think is probably unconsciously influenced by Whovian.

I picked the clarinet at the age of 11 when we were given free lessons on orchestral instruments in the last year of primary school. I had spent my childhood playing recorder, and was of the (mistaken) opinion that the clarinet was the logical upgrade. Actually, that would probably have been the flute, but je ne regrette rien!

Hey! Excuse my dumbness but what is a Whovian??

I guess a lot of people pick up instruments in school. I played the oboe and played in the school band. I was ok but not great and I think my true love was always for making music with electronics! I do love hearing (and making) music mixing 'classical' instruments with electronic ones though - I'm currently experimenting with a Piccolo sample in a track I'm working on.

Good luck with Hive - it can be a bit of an overwhelming one to start with but well worth it. I started about 4.5 months ago and now it's my primary goto online community.

A fan of Doctor Who!

Thanks - I keep looking at electronic wind instruments, but there's something about the sounds that isn't good to my ear. It might be because I don't like the preloaded sounds, or simply that I prefer the actual clarinet/sax/recorder sound. It's not the same instrument really. I suppose it's a synth marketed to wind players.

A fan of Doctor Who!

Oh of course! I should probably have known that!

Interesting about electronic wind instruments - I think you probably have the right idea that they should be treated as a different instrument - one with very different possibilities though!

Looking forward to reading your posts on Hive and hearing your music...

Welcome to Hive at last! It does help when you have a few friends here already to guide you. You will have to get some videos up soon. @todayslight posted one of our band yesterday and his post is doing well.

If you look on my feed you will find a fair few musicians. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy.

Have fun!
