Utah provides an interesting study in polygamy. You might look up Warren Jeffs, the FLDS, The Kingston Clan. There are many other fundamentalist groups. Many of them have very dark histories.
The clans usually start with a group that feels compelled to redefine marriage. The first generation feel that they created something liberating. Later generations end up being treated like sex toys.
I don't know if that will happen with monogamous same sex unions. The bad things seem to happen when polygamy enters the picture.
